Panathinaikos team profile
|
Already one of the proudest and most recognized clubs in Europe, Panathinaikos reached new heights last season with a first-ever triple crown – winning the Euroleague title and the Greek Cup and league championship. With all the hardware crammed into the club's trophy case, it's hard to believe that there could be anything left for the Greens to achieve. Panathinaikos has ruled in Greece for some time now, after first taking charge with 12 domestic titles in a 17-year stretch between 1967 and 1984. The late 1980s and early '90s proved to be a dry period for the club, but that changed in 1996, when a team led by legends like Panagiotis Giannakis, Dominique Wilkins and Frankie Alvertis edged Barcelona by a single point in Paris thanks to a last-gap Stojko Vrankovic to secure the first Euroleague title for a Greek team. By the time it had added its second and third continental crowns, in 2000 and 2002, Panathinaikos had reached an international status reserved for very few clubs. At home, the winning continued with a string of domestic crowns. Since 1998, the Greens have won 9 Greek League titles to give the club an unprecedented total of 28.

| Panathinaikos returned to the Euroleague Final Four in Moscow 2005, where it was ousted by eventual champ Maccabi Tel Aviv in the semifinals. Coach Zelgko Obradovic's side came within one win of a return to the continent's showcase event in 2006 before losing to Tau Ceramica in a deciding Game 3 of the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Last year the club kept its eye on the ball from the very start of the season, winning its first 11 games and coasting into the Final Four. Captain Alvertis was able to finally lift the crown only after Panathinaikos and Final Four MVP Dimitris Diamantidis knocked off defending champ CSKA Moscow 93-91 in the final at the club's home venue, the Athens Olympic Indoor Arena (OAKA), in one of the most electrifying championship games in the sport's history. Now all that's left for the Greek champs to accomplish is to join the exclusive list of teams to win back-to-back Euroleague crowns, and that is sure to be coach Obradovic's charges main goal when the new season finally tips off.
