J. D. JACKSON,
Head Coach

Coach, tell us about your team's roster for the next Euroleague season, what changes you made and what improvements you expect to gain from those decisions?
"We have a new coach obviously, and we tried to make a team with more Euroleague experience, and some players with a name in the competition that can compete here like David Bluthenthal, who has a high level and we hope he can pick us up in some games and raise our level to make us win some games. We still have Alain Koffi, a strong forward. We also have J.P. Batista who played with Rytas and also has experience, so we have a great group of players in their prime, from 25 to 28 years old. I think we can surprise a lot of people this year."
How much can you learn from the preseason about your team? What signs do you look for now that will help when the Euroleague starts?
"It is still early as most teams are still only doing physical work and we just got a couple of players healthy ourselves, so it's still early. There are close games and it's good that we show we can win in the last quarter, which was a problem for us last year especially in the Euroleague. The pressure in defensive situations is something we hope we can improve on. Our team is very motivated and positive in the group, which is a positive thing for me. We will try to play fast and take advantage of our organization. This is something that French teams need to do, because we play against stronger teams with deeper rotations."
Now that all the other teams have mostly completed their rosters, how does the competition in the Euroleague this season look like to you?
"It's pretty impressive when you watch the names that are coming into the teams. A lot of rosters are very deep with a lot of talent and there are also a lot of European players who are coming back to the Euroleague. I think that is a very interesting thing for this competition and for European basketball. From our perspective, tha fact that the regular season is down to 10 games it gives us a bigger chance to surprise by winning some games and qualifying to the Top 16. Once these big, strong teams start to play together and better it is harder for smaller teams to compete after 6 or 8 games, so I am pretty positive. I think we can give some surprises with speed and organization."
What are your goals going into the new Euroleague season?
"We have to surpass expectations. We have to not put a condition on our team. We have some guys who have Top 16 experience and our goal has to be simply to make better than last year. How far are we going to be able to take that, one can only guess. But we are surely motivated to do it."

With a new head coach and a revamped roster, Le Mans Sarthe Basket is very much starting fresh in order to challenge for a spot in the Top 16 and beyond in the 2008-09 Euroleague. New bench boss J.D. Jackson steps onto the sidelines and begins the season with only two players that saw meaningful minutes with the team last year: teenage point guard Antoine Diot and center Alain Koffi. With that in mind, the rebuilt roster features plenty of experienced players, including former Euroleague champion shooter David Bluthenthal, superscorer Dewarick Spencer and shot-blocking center Pape Badiane. One of the keys for Le Mans will be playmaker Brian Chase, who will be the Le Mans floor general in his debut Euroleague season. With equal parts talent, youth, experience and motivation, if Jackson can get the chemistry right with this squad, Le Mans should be an exciting team to follow this Euroleague season.

Spencer proved in his Euroleague debut last season that he can fill the baskets at any level, finishing as the second-best scorer in the regular season for Virtus Bologna. A former French League MVP and scoring champ, Spencer will likely be the focal point of the offense. Chase is a dynamic combo guard whose court vision and ability to score from behind the arc make him a dangerous offensive weapon. Together, Spencer and Chase give Le Mans a fantastic one-two scoring punch. Diot gives the team a different look in the backcourt. Tall and tough, Diot sees the court well and is tough enough to mix it up on defense or on the boards. Similarly, swingman Jeremy Leloup saw limited action last season and will look to take a step up in minutes and production this season. Promising teenagers Enzo Tsonga and Pierre Drouault give Jackson some extra backcourt depth.
Bluthenthal is one of the best three-point shooters in Euroleague history and his experience at the highest levels should help this team come together. A versatile player, Bluthenthal can play either forward spot depending upon the lineups Jaskson sets. Badiane and Koffi will man the paint, both bringing similar skills as efficient players on offense and intimidators on the glass. Late arrival Joao Paulo Batista will look to earn big minutes in the Euroleague for the first time. The Brazilian power forward combines toughness with savvy offensive moves that should compliment Badiane and Koffi on both sides of the floor. The athletic Maleye Ndoye has constantly improved over the past few seasons and will look to make an impact with his new team in the Euroleague this year. Teenage forwards John Walter Wilkins and Antoine Gomis and center Nequeba Samake round out the frontcourt.
Le Mans was one of the more entertaining teams to watch in the Euroleague last season, but found itself on the wrong end of many close games. That experience has helped the whole organization to go in a new direction, the goal of which is to continue playing exciting basketball, while starting to attain better results. The team is stocked with excellent perimeter options and those shooters will help create space for the big men. If all goes as planned, Le Mans will not only compete from the start of the season, but from every tipoff to every final buzzer, collecting victories with every opportunity.
