Panagiotis Giannakis, Head Coach

Coach, tell us about your team's roster for the next Euroleague season, what changes you made and what improvements you expect to gain from those decisions?
“Like any team who has an owner that loves his team and wants to spend for the team, they expect to have a very good team. So we have tried with the players we’ve chosen to have a very good team with good chemistry and good character. So I think we know that it’s difficult with so many new players to have early results, but I think that with good character of the players we’re going to try to work every day with a lot of desire and discipline and to learn each other and to get quick results as a team. This year we’re going to try to have a very strong defensive team.”
How much can you learn from the preseason about your team? What signs do you look for now that will help when the Euroleague starts?
“Always when preparing the team we try to work on understanding each other. We have to think about how we can be a winning team. It’s nice sometimes to play a nice running and shooting style, but it’s different than understanding how to win games. So for me the most important thing in the preparation is to understand each other and to learn how to limit our opportunities to lose games. It’s important to have patience. This time is important for building ourselves for the season so that we can have very good results at the end.”
What are your goals going into the new Euroleague season?
“The Euroleague has some teams that in the last few years have the same coaches and some of the same players, so we are going to face two different types of teams. One is like CSKA and Panathinaikos that have the same coaches and most of the players are the same, so they have an easier time at the beginning, and some other teams have newer coaches and new players. So I expect very interesting teams because there are more teams this year that expect to do more. So I think there will be great games and very competitive games.”
What are your goals going into the new Euroleague season?
“We know that’s it’s a long season, but we have to take of every game. The players need to understand that they must be focused for every game and for every moment of the game. So we will always try to win and we want to beat everybody. But for this you have to build your confidence and build your concentration. That’s what’s most important and we’ll try for that first. And then we’ll see at the end what we have to do.”

No team in Europe played a bigger role in the off-season market than Olympiacos Piraeus, which is back for another Euroleague season with a roster full of marquee signings. The Reds managed to land former Euroleague MVP Theo Papaloukas, former All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic, All-Euroleague second team selection Yotam Halperin, rising star Zoran Erceg and Josh Childress, who opted to leave the NBA to join Olympiacos. Moreover, head coach Panagiotis Giannakis retained most of the players that helped Olympiacos come withing one win of its first Final Four appearance since 1999. Lynn Greer, Milos Teodosic, Arvydas Macijauskas, Panos Vasilopoulos, George Printezis, Giannis Bouroussis and a recovered Sofoklis Schorsianitis round out arguably one of the most powerful rosters in the competition. The sky in truly the limit for Olympiacos, which has made a great effort to challenge for what would be its second Euroleague title.

Papaloukas, a two-time Euroleague winner with CSKA, returns to Olympiacos after six seasons in Moscow. He comes back as one of the brightest Euroleague stars, as his combination of size, outstanding court sense, game vision, experience and leadership is simply unmatchable. Greer provides clutch play, deep shooting range and driving skills, while Teodosic has a great chance to learn from Papaloukas and become an elite point guard. Halperin comes off a great season with Maccabi in which he showed his full potential and his best years are yet to come. Halperin will likely start right away since star-crossed shooting ace Macijauskas is out with a broken foot. Childress joins the Reds to offer an all-around package of athleticism, sound shooting and defense that compliments those that play with him. He will be determinant once he overcomes an adjustment period. Michalis Pelekanos is a do-it-all swingman with good defensive and jumping skills while Igor Milosevic may see some time at point guard.
Vasilopoulos is a solid choice at any forward spot to his versatility, size and quickness. He is also ready to pull the trigger in crunch time. Printezis is a modern forward with great ball-handling, athleticism and driving skills. Both players are set to see more minutes at small forward since Olympiacos has a strong and deep battery of big men. Vujcic is a world-class passing center, with brilliant post skills and outstanding court vision. If Vujcic is in shape, few players can stop him. The same could be said about Schortsanitis, a dominant force in the paint due to his combination strength, speed, size and soft hands. Bouroussis a great offensive rebounder who offers intensity and instant offense. At age 25, He has the makings of a Euroleague star. Erceg is the brightest product from the always-prolific FMP farmyard, a power forward with unlimited range and outstanding one-on-one skills. This, however, will be his first Euroleague season.
Coach Giannakis led Olympiacos back from a slow start last season to knock hard on the Final Four door. Eventual champion CSKA stood on its way to success, but there are enough reasons to think that the Reds may well be fighting for the Euroleague title in Berlin next May. With a good number of Greek players used to playing together and the additions of Vujcic, Halperin, Childress and Erceg, Olympiacos will try to break Panathinaikos's hegemony in Greece while rewriting its own Euroleague history.
