Khimki inks playmaker Lopez
Raul Lopez joins Khimki Moscow RegionA reigning Olympic silver medalist has joined the newest Euroleague team with the announcement on Friday that point guard Raul Lopez and Khimki Moscow Region have agreed to a two-year contract. Lopez (182, 29) has played the last two seasons and his entire four-year Euroleague career with Real Madrid of Spain. Last year, he averaged 6.4 points and 3.0 assists in 17 Euroleague games as a nearly fulltime starter for Madrid. His assist average ranked Lopez 10th among the Euroleague's best passers last season. Lopez began his career with Joventut Badalona in his native Spain. Lopez's first Euroleague stint with Madrid was 2000 to 2002, when he averaged 10 points and 3.3 assists in his second season. He suffered an injury and missed the following year, spent two seasons with Utah of the NBA, then returned to Spain with Girona in 2005-06. A season later, he was back at Madrid and with the team won both the ULEB Cup and the Spanish League title. Lopez has also been a successful member of the Spanish national team, highlighted by their silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
