Maccabi, Perkins fall short in L.A.
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv finished its two-game United States tour with a 108-96 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center on Tuesday. Despite the loss, it was a night to remember for two Maccabi players as Doron Perkins recorded a triple-double of 16 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 5 steals and Los Angeles native David Bluthenthal came back from injury to score 12 points in front of friends and family. Maccabi, which lost to the New York Knicks on Sunday, returns to Israel on Wednesday. The longer NBA game got the best of Maccabi once more, which led 40-42 late in the second quarter, before Los Angeles finished the half on a 13-0 run and never looked back. Had the first half been 20 minutes like in international play, Maccabi would have entered halftime with the game tied 42-42, instead of 42-53. The tired visitors, who had traveled over 13,000 kilometers in the previous five days, were never able to erase that double-digit deficit in the second half, despite the best efforts of Perkins, Bluthenthal and Chuck Eidson. German national team center Chris Kaman paced Los Angeles with 18 points, Sebastian Telfair added 15 and rookie Blake Griffin posted 13 points and 10 rebounds fro the winners. Eidson led Maccabi in scoring with 18. A moment of silence was observed for former Maccabi team manager Moni Fanan before the game. Maccabi also wore black ribbons in his memory. Fanan, who passed away on Monday, was laid to rest earlier Tuesday in Israel.
