In one of the most competitive seasons in European basketball history, only one team was able to make it through the Quarterfinal Playoffs undefeated and advance early to the 2006 Final Four. That team was CSKA Moscow, and one major reason for its success was shooting guard Trajan Langdon, Euroleague Basketball's choice as MVP for April. Behind Landgon's leadership in the quarterfinals, CSKA qualified for its fourth consecutive Final Four, a record since the format came to European basketball in 1988. Langdon was simply sensational in both games against Efes Pilsen, averaging 18 points while hitting 58.4% of his three-pointers and 83.3% of his free throws. He played a crucial role in the series clincher, Game 2 in Istanbul, firing in 5 of 7 three-pointers on his way to 24 points against his former team. The biggest prize, however, was CSKA sweeping the series to return to the Final Four before anyone else, which made Trajan Langdon a perfect choice for MVP in April.
Euroleague Basketball's MVP of the Month honor is in its second season Although statistics and performance ratings are taken into consideration for the award, they alone do not determine who is honored. The winner is named by the Euroleague Basketball based on his and his team's performance during the previous month. Although the Final Four is still to be played and completed in April, it will have its own MVP. Therefore, it has been decided to include all games before the Final Four in considerations for the April MVP award.
With his team facing the most dangerous phase of the season, Langdon responded by boosting his scoring average more than 6 points in the Quarterfinal Playoffs, in which he averaged more 33 minutes in the series against Efes Pilsen. He had 12 points in Game 1, in which CSKA held off a late Efes rally to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Langdon had a major effect on defense, too, helping CSKA to limit Efes top gun Antonio Granger to just 5 points.
Langdon did even better in Game 2 in front of a sellout crowd of Efes fans in Istanbul who knew him well from a previous stint with the team. Langdon led all scorers with 24 points on 5 of 7 three-pointers, including a high-flying bomb from downtown that put CSKA fully in charge in the final 2 minutes. His late free throws sealed a 71-75 win that puthis new team back in the Final Four. Langdon had only broken the 20-point mark once before in a CSKA uniform, but he stepped up in the most decisive game of the season so far to lead his team to the first road victory of the quarterfinals. He is the second CSKA player to earn Euroleague April MVP honors, after Marcus Brown took the honor exactly one year ago.
