2001-02 REGULAR SEASON
The 2001-02 regular season saw 32 teams drawn into 4 groups of 8. Only the best 4 teams would advance to the next phase, the brand new Top 16, so competition was hard from the very beginning, guaranteeing thrilling games all over the continent. Benetton Treviso won Group A with an 11-3 record, edging Maccabi and Olympiakos, that finished with 10-4. Efes Pilsen almost reached the next round at 9-5. Defending champion Kinder Bologna dominated Group B with a 12-2 record. Barcelona, Ulker and Union Olimpija advanced. SuproLeague champion Panathinaikos won Group C also with a 12-2 record. Real Madrid, Skipper Bologna and CSKA Moscow survived a tough group in which Krka Novo Mesto and Pau-Orthez also kept their options alive until the final game. In Group D, Tau was first due to its tie-break advantage against AEK. Ural Great and Scavolini advanced in a three-way tie with Asvel, that just as Opel Skyliners in Group D, could not make it despite a 8-6 record. Alphonso Ford of Olympiakos was the regular season top scorer (24.6 ppg.), Mirsad Turkcan of CSKA its best rebounder (13.9 rpg.) and Michael Hawkins of Idea Slask led this phase in assists (5 apg.).

REGULAR SEASON GAME 1
The 2001-02 regular season could not have a more thrilling start, with three games going into overtime. Benetton edged Unicaja 98-94 in Group A behind 26 points from Jorge Garbajosa, Opening Tournament champ Cibona Vip downed Tau Ceramica 96-95 with 23 points from Reggie Freeman while Asvel beat AEK 86-84 with 22 points from Kyle Hill.
Dejan Bodiroga - Panathinaikos
REGULAR SEASON GAME 2
A star was born in regular season Game 2, as Jaka Lakovic delivered a career-defining performance. He had 38 points to help Krka Novo Mesto to upset Real Madrid in the Spanish capital. Ural Great downed Oostende 79-84 to climb atop the Group D standings. Panathinaikos downed CSKA 85-91 in Moscow with 26 points from Ibrahim Kutluay.
Adam Wojcik - Peristeri
REGULAR SEASON GAME 3
Only four teams - Olympiakos, Union Olimpija, Kinder Bologna and Panathinaikos - stayed undefeated after 3 regular season games. Olimpija thrashed Zalgiris 87-66 behind 18 points from Haris Mujezinovic. Virtus edged Ulker 68-60 with 14 points from Sani Becirovic and Olympiakos downed Idea Slask 101-79. James Forrest had 27 points.
Valeri Daineko - Ural Great
REGULAR SEASON GAME 4
Game 4 saw as many as six road wins, as well as some teams showing their status as top contenders. Unicaja downed Olympiacos behind 26 points from Milan Gurovic. Skipper Bologna downed Zadar 95-85 and Gregor Fucka outdid himself with a career-high 38 points. Partizan ICN upset Tau Ceramica 80-85 with 28 points from Vlado Scepanovic.
Derrick Phelps - Alba Berlin
REGULAR SEASON GAME 5
Defending champion Kinder Bologna was the only undefeated team in the competition after 5 games. Virtus downed Union Olimpija 86-70 in Bologna behind 15 points from Sani Becirovic. Krka edged Panathinaikos 82-81 on free throws by Marko Samanic. Opel Skyliners improved to 4-1 with a 74-70 home win against Ulker.
Melvin Booker - Scavolini
REGULAR SEASON GAME 6
With Kinder Bologna still undefeated, only three other teams - Panathinaikos, Real Madrid and Ural Great - had respective 5-1 records. Maccabi rejoined the fight to win Group A with a 78-73 home win against Olympiakos. Anthony Parker had 23 points. Charleroi upset Efes Pilsen 79-75 to grab its first win.
Roger Esteller - EB Pau-Orthez
REGULAR SEASON GAME 7
The 2000-01 regular season reached its halfway mark with Benetton, Kinder Bologna, Panathinaikos and AEK leading their regular season groups. Opel Skyliners handed Kinder its first loss this season, 80-79, on a game-winning basket by Marcus Goree. AEK edged Cibona 72-69 with 30 points from Demos Dikoudis.
Arijan Komazec - AEK Athens
REGULAR SEASON GAME 8
What an incredible week! It started in Istanbul, where Olympiakos edged Efes 79-80 on James Forrest's buzzer-beating triple. In Wroclaw, a halfcourt shot by Jacques Stas sent Charleroi to a 94-95 overtime victory against Idea Slask. It culminated in Malaga, Benetton's Jorge Garbajosa nailed a three-pointer to steal a 67-68 decision from Unicaja.
Manu Ginobili - Kinder Bologna
REGULAR SEASON GAME 9
One of the most miraculous comebacks imaginable - four consecutive three-point baskets in the final minute by Scavolini Pesaro to beat Cibona 71-74 - started Week 9 in style. In a big thriller, Panathinaikos edged CSKA 83-80 behind 31 points from Damir Mulaomerovic. Virtus beat Barcelona 91-81 in another big showdown.
Anthony Parker - Maccabi
REGULAR SEASON GAME 10
Panathinaikos became the first team to make it to the Top 16 with a 67-63 win over visiting Pau-Orthez. CSKA edged Buducnost 88-83 behind 28 points and a competition record 23 rebounds from Mirsad Turkcan. Real Madrid thrashed visiting Zadar 111-84 with 19 points each from Alberto Herreros and Alberto Angulo.
Roberts Stelmahers - Ulker
REGULAR SEASON GAME 11
The Top 16 battle got closer than ever, with 6 teams battling for 4 spots in Group D. Benetton and Maccabi Elite made it to the Top 16 in this round. Benetton thrashed Alba Berlin 100-71 in Treviso behind 19 points from Mario Stojic. In Tel Aviv, Maccabi defeated Charleroi 94-78 with 21 points from Anthony Parker.
Davor Kus - Cibona
REGULAR SEASON GAME 12
Four more teams - Olympiakos and Efes Pilsen in Group A, Kinder Bologna in Group B and Tau Ceramica in Group D - clinched respective Top 16 spots. Kinder edged Union Olimpija 85-89 behind 25 points from David Andersen. Tau had less problems to down Scavolini 75-85 in Pesaro. Chris Corchiani led Tau with 15 points.
Nacho Rodriguez - FC Barcelona
REGULAR SEASON GAME 13
AEK, Scavolini Pesaro, Real Madrid and Barcelona made it to the next round in Game 13, leaving five remaining spots for the do-or-die final regular season night. CSKA downed Madrid 82-86 in the Spanish capital with 24 points from Mirsad Turkcan. AEK topped Ural Great 99-85 with 21 points from Michalis Kakiouzis.

REGULAR SEASON GAME 14
The 2000-01 regular season came to an end and five teams - Ulker and Union Olimpija in Group B, Skipper in Group C, Ural Great and CSKA in Group D - were last to advance. Olimpija topped Barcelona 80-74 to stay alive in the competition. Ural Great topped Tau Ceramica 94-88 behind 19 points from Valeri Daineko.
