2001-02 TOP 16
The new format proved to be a very exciting ones, with the best teams in European club basketball fighting to win its Top 16 groups and clinch a Final Four berth. Benetton Treviso won Group E due to its tie-break advantage against FC Barcelona. Benetton downed Skipper Bologna 73-86 in Week 6 to win a group with as many as three Italian teams. The other Italian squad, defending champion Kinder Bologna, won Group B a week in advance and got a big chance to win another Euroleague title in its home court. Group G featured three Greek teams, and one of them, SuproLeague champion Panathinaikos, advanced to the Final Four. Panathinaikos topped Union Olimpija 72-79 to make it to the big event in Bologna. Last but not least, Maccabi reached the Final Four with an outstanding 65-94 road win against Tau Ceramica to become the Group H champion. Once again Alphonso Ford of Olympiacos was the Top 16 best scorer (25 ppg.), Joseph Blair of Scavolini Pesaro became its best rebounder (11.8 rpg.) and Elmer Bennett of Tau Ceramica was first in assists (5.5 apg.).
TOP 16 GAME 1
The 2001-02 Top 16 started with some upset and thrilling games along the way. Ural Great downed Real Madrid 88-95 in Group F behind 26 points from Ruslan Avleev. Olympiakos downed archrivals Panathinaikos 92-75 to open Group G with a win. Alphonso Ford led the Reds with 21 points. In Bologna, Skipper edged Barcelona 97-93 in Group E while in Istanbul, Kinder downed Efes Pilsen 73-76 in Group F. Manu Ginobili led Kinder with 21 points.
TOP 16 GAME 2
Benetton Treviso, Kinder Bologna, Olympiakos and Tau Ceramica were undefeated in their respective Top 16 groups and got close to grab a Final Four spot. Benetton topped Skipper Bologna 96-90 in Treviso to lead Group E. Kinder used a 72-61 home win against Ural Great to sit atop Group F. In Group G, Olympiacos downed AEK 75-69 to stay undefeated. In Group D, Tau edged Maccabi 77-78 on a game-winning running triple by Elmer Bennett.
TOP 16 GAME 3
Kinder and Olympiakos stayed undefeated after 3 Top 16 games, with great chances to keep fighting for Euroleague glory. Kinder thrashed Real Madrid 58-86 on the road with 24 points from Matjaz Smodis. In a critical game in Group H, CSKA downed Tau Ceramica 73-87 in Vitoria. Gordan Giricek led CSKA with 25 points. Barcelona edged Benetton 76-75 on a buzzer-beater by Sarunas Jasikevicius - his second one in as many games.
TOP 16 GAME 4
Kidner Bologna was all but qualified to the Final Four by beating Efes Pilsen 77-71 in a key game in Group F. Once again Matjaz Smodis led Kinder with 24 points. In Group G, Panathinaikos defeated Olympiakos 88-78 behind 23 points from Darryl Middleton. CSKA beat Maccabi 81-77 in Group H while Scavolini defeated Benetton 101-98 in Group E. Melvin Booker paced the winners with 26 points while Marko Tusek added 21.
TOP 16 GAME 5
Kinder became the first team to reach the 2002 Final Four, with Benetton, Panathinaikos and Tau Ceramica leading their respective Top 16 groups. Kinder advanced despite a 71-82 home loss against Real Madrid, that needed to win by 28 to keep its options alive. Panathinaikos edged AEK 96-92 to lead Group G. Dejan Bodiroga had 27 points for the Greens. Tau downed CSKA 73-90 in Moscow behind 22 points from Luis Scola.
TOP 16 GAME 6
Panathinaikos, Benetton and Maccabi joined Kinder in the 2002 Final Four! Maccabi Tel Aviv marched through the front door to another Final Four on Thursday with an overwhelming 65-94 road win against Tau Ceramica. Panathinaikos downed Union Olimpija 72-79 to reach the big event in Bologna. Meanwhile, Benetton advanced to the Final Four by topping Skipper Bologna 73-86 on the road behind 20 points from Tyus Edney.
