PHASE PAGES: Top 16, 2003-04
Basketball fans in 2004 were treated to an exciting Top 16 that they will long remember, capped by two tickets to the Final Four decided in the closing seconds. CSKA Moscow dominated its group by starting with five straight wins; Montepaschi prevailed in another group that included the 2003 finalists, Barcelona and Benetton Treviso; Skipper Bologna booked its spot on free throws in the closing seconds of its sixth game, but the most memorable of all came in Tel Aviv, weeks before that city hosted the Final Four, when Maccabi beat Zalgiris in a head-to-head clash for a ticket to the Final Four, forcing overtime on Derrick Sharp’s buzzer-beating miracle triple, which also proved to be the last game of the legendary Arvydas Sabonis’s Euroleague career.
TOP 16 GAME 1
Arvydas Sabonis dominated with 25 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists for a Top 16 record 47 index as Zalgiris beat Ulker on the road. In all, five of the eight games went to the visiting teams: In addition to Zalgiris, it was Efes Pilsen, led by Antonio Granger’s 25 points; Barcelona, led by Dejan Bodiroga’s 23 points; Maccabi, led by Anthony Parker’s 23 points; and Tau, behind 18 each from Luis Scola and Arvydas Macijauskas.
TOP 16 GAME 2
The Top 16 began shaping up as a wild one with Group F featuring four teams tied at 1-1 after two games, including Benetton, which beat Barcelona on the road in a rematch of last season’s title game. CSKA improved to 2-0 in Group D as Mirsad Turkcan set a then-Top 16 rebounding record with 21. Ed Cota and Arvydas Sabonis led Zalgiris over Maccabi and to first place in Group G.
TOP 16 GAME 3
The only remaining undefeated team at the halfway mark of the Top 16 is CSKA Moscow, which edged Tau on the road behind 22 points from Marcus Brown. Barcelona regained a share of first in Group F after beating Panathinaikos in Athens, where Dejan Bodiroga was honored by his old team. Wins for Pamesa and Maccabi created a three-way tie atop Group G.
TOP 16 GAME 4
The focus was again on Group F, where Jorge Garbajosa forced overtime and Tyus Edney took over as Benetton topped Panathinaikos 111-101, despite a brilliant 36-point showing from Jaka Lakovic. And David Vanterpool’s last second free throw took Montepaschi over Barcelona. Skipper and Efes Pilsen both won to stay tied atop Group E and CSKA crushed Olympiacos to stay perfect in group D.
TOP 16 GAME 5
CSKA, down 5 with 50 second to play, rallied to beat Tau and return to the Final Four. Skipper edged Efes Pilsen on Gianluca Basile’s three-pointer with 2 seconds to take over pole position in Group E. Victories for Panathinaikos and Montepaschi mean that all four teams are within one win heading into the last game in Group F and Ulker’s stunner over Maccabi and Pamesa’s win at Zalgiris leave a three-way tie in Group G.
TOP 16 GAME 6
Milos Vujanic hit a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds to play to send Skipper to the Final Four and Montepaschi Siena beat Panathinaikos on the road to punch its ticket, but it will be Derrick Sharp’s miracle three-pointer that capped a late Maccabi comeback and forced overtime before beating Zalgiris for the last remaining Sinal Four berth that will long be remembered from this week.
