PHASE PAGES: Top 16, 2004-05
The 2004-05 Top 16 lived up to the expectations, with five teams qualifying in the final date while two others - AEK and Climamio Bologna - could not make it to the Quarterfinal Playoffs despite respective 4-2 record. Maccabi Elite was the only undefeated team in this phase, showing it was ready to defend its title. CSKA also won its regular season group at 5-1 but its outstanding winning streak - 18 Euroleague games, 43 also counting domestic competitions - came to an end due to a home loss against Dejan Bodiroga's Winterthur FC Barcelona. Panathinaikos and Benetton Treviso won their respective Top 16 groups due to tie-break advantages in three-way ties. Ulker, Scavolini, Tau Ceramica and Efes Pilsen also booked playoff spots. Tau guard Arvydas Macijauskas was the Top 16 best scorer (20.8 ppg.), Tanoka Beard of Zalgiris its best rebounder (9.7 rpg.) while Sarunas Jasikevicius of Maccabi led this phase in assists (6.2 apg.).
TOP 16 GAME 1
All main favourites opened the Top 16 with convincing wins. Maccabi Elite thrashed Ulker 90-69 behind 21 points from Sarunas Jasikevicius while CSKA defeated Winterthur FCB 70-91 in Barcelona with 27 points on 11-for-12 two-pointer from David Andersen. Efes Pilsen downed Prokom 86-62 while Panathinaikos topped Zalgiris 73-84.
TOP 16 GAME 2
Maccabi Elite, CSKA Moscow, Tau Ceramica and AEK led their respective Top 16 groups at 2-0. AEK beat Efes Pilsen 70-69 on a game-winning triple by Nikos Zisis. Maccabi edged Montepaschi 85-84 on a late shot by Sarunas Jasikevicius. CSKA thrashed Zalgiris 88-68 with its 16th consecutive win. Marcus Brown led CSKA with 20 points.
TOP 16 GAME 3
Maccabi, CSKA and AEK stayed undefeated and got closer to clinch a playoff spot. Maccabi downed Cibona VIP 74-91 behind 20 points from Sarunas Jasikevicius. CSKA edged Real Madrid 94-95 in overtime on the road with 25 points from David Andersen. Meanwhile, AEK defeated Prokom 59-75, as Nikos Zisis led the winners with 19 points.
TOP 16 GAME 4
Maccabi Tel Aviv became the first to qualify for the Quarterfinal Playoffs with a 67-83 road win against Ulker. Winterthur FC Barcelona handed CSKA its first Euroleague loss this season - breaking a historical 43-game overall winning streak in all competitions - with a 68-79 road triumph in Moscow. Dejan Bodiroga led CSKA with 18 points.
TOP 16 GAME 5
Scavolini Pesaro advanced to the playoffs by downing Winterthur FCB 87-101 in Barcelona. Charles Smith and Scoonie Penn combined for 49 points and 12 three-pointers. CSKA also sealed a playoff spot by topping Real Madrid 89-73 in Moscow while Climamio Bologna downed Zalgiris 87-74 to lead Group F. Erazem Lorbek led the winners with 24 points.
TOP 16 GAME 6
Panathinaikos, Tau Ceramica, Benetton, Efes Pilsen and Ulker reached the playoffs down the stretch. Ulker rallied from a double-digit deficit in the final 7 minutes to edge Cibona VIP 64-68. Tau topped Zalgiris 82-86 to stay alive while Efes knocked off AEK 69-62 behin 18 points from Henry Domercant.
