EB Top 16There were energy, drama, action and outstanding games in the 2005-06 Euroleague Basketball Top 16. Group D was so close that all four teams - Cibona, Benetton, Panathinaikos and Efes - were tied at 3-3 at the end of this phase. Panathinaikos became the group champion and Efes was second while Cibona, that got to the Top 16 in the very last minute, could not advantage despite posting an early 3-0 record. Olympiacos beat Unicaja twice to reach the playoffs in Group A along with Winterthur FC Barcelona. Maccabi won Group B and reached the playoff along with Real Madrid, that had a solid start to stay alive. In Group C, CSKA Moscow won its five opening games while Tau Ceramica also qualified way in advance. One thing is for certain - everything can happen in the 2005-06 Quarterfinal Playoffs, as considering what we saw in the Top 16, any team can be beaten anywhere.

The 2005-06 Top 16 started with some surprises along the way. Cibona downed Panathinaikos 72-70 in Zagreb with 23 points from Scoonie Penn. Meanwhile, Real Madrid defeated defending champion Maccabi Elite 90-75 in the Spanish capital behind 18 points from Igor Rakocevic. CSKA, Winterthur FCB and Tau Ceramica opened the Top 16 with respective road wins.

Cibona keeps rolling in the 2005-06 Top 16 by edging Efes Pilsen 63-69 in Istanbul behind 23 points from an unstoppable Scoonie Penn. CSKA downed Tau 82-76 in Moscow with 21 points from Matjaz Smodis, Winterthur FCB conquered a 68-71 road win against Unicaja in Malaga while Benetton upset Panathinaikos 76-69, among other highlights.

Only four teams - Winterthur FCB, Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow and Cibona - are still unbeaten midway through the Top 16. Barcelona edged Olympiacos 76-72. Gianluca Basile and January MVP Juan Carlos Navarro each had 20 points. Cibona topped Benetton 91-80, Madrid edged Ulker 69-71 while CSKA downed GHP Bamberg 64-75.

CSKA Moscow and Winterthur FCB became the first teams to reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs with 4 wins in as many games. Barcelona downed Zalgiris 81-69 at home behind 23 points from Juan Carlos Navarro. Meanwhile, CSKA topped Lietuvos Rytas 79-69 with 16 points from Matjaz Smodis and 14 from Trajan Langdon.

 TOP 16 GAME 5
Olympiacos, Real Madrid, Maccabi Elite and Tau Ceramica joined previously qualified CSKA Moscow and Winterthur FC Barcelona in the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Panathinaikos stayed in the race to reach the next round by downing Efes Pilsen 56-66 in Group D in Istanbul with 14 points each from Jaka Lakovic and Kosta Tsartsaris.

 TOP 16 GAME 6
Winterthur FC Barcelona, Maccabi Elite, CSKA Moscow and Panathinaikos reached the Quarterfinal Playoffs as Top 16 group champions - and therefore gained the home court advantage in the best-of-three series. Panathinaikos topped Benetton 81-70 while Maccabi thrashed Ulker 66-88 behind 25 points from Maceo Baston.
