Khimki proved its worth all season long behind 7DAYS EuroCup MVP Alexey Shved, even though a promising season finished without any trophies. Khimki was perfect at home in the regular season in which it went 6-2 to finish atop Group B. Jacob Pullen was MVP for Round 3 of the regular season after tallying 25 points and 5 assists in a 72-102 rout of ALBA Berlin. Shved had his best game of a fantastic Top 16 with 32 points and 8 assists in an 85-84 Round 4 victory over ratiopharm Ulm, which helped Khimki arrive to a showdown in the Top 16 finale against FC Bayern Munich with a chance to win Group F. Despite another big game from Shved, Khimki lost its only home game of the season to place second in the group. That led to a tough quarterfinals challenge against Valencia Basket. After losing a close road game late in Game 1, Khimki went back home and routed Valencia 98-74 behind Shved’s double-double to even the best-of-three series. However Valencia was too strong in Game 3 and wrapped up the series with a home win. Khimki’s overall record was 11-6 in a strong EuroCup campaign.

History

Khimki Moscow Region is set to play its fifth EuroLeague campaign, which testifies to the heights the club has climbed since its founding just two decades ago. Khimki first opened its doors in 1997 and it took only six years to make the Russian League semifinals and the first of three straight Russian Cup semifinal appearances. In 2006, Khimki reached the Russian League and Russian Cup finals, but fell to CSKA Moscow in both, while Joventut Badalona beat Khimki in the 2006 FIBA EuroCup final. The young club’s hard work paid off when it downed CSKA in the 2007 Russian Cup final for its first crown of any kind. That season, Khimki also reached the first of three consecutive Russian League finals and made its ULEB Cup debut, in which it reaching the Last 16. Khimki made more big strides in 2008-09 by reaching the EuroCup title game, but fell short against Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius. In its EuroLeague debut a year later, Khimki showed it was no average newcomer and reached the Top 16. The club added more silverware to the trophy room by winning the VTB United League in 2011 at CSKA’s expense and a year later downed Valencia Basket in the 2012 EuroCup Finals for its first continental title behind the play of Zoran Planinic, Vitaly Fridzon and Kreso Loncar. The following season, Khimki’s third EuroLeague campaign finished a win short of a place in the playoffs, but it was also the first of the two straight title-free seasons. However, Khimki learned from its mistakes in the 2014-15 season. The team won its regular season and Last 32 groups and swept three of its four elimination round series – including the EuroCup Finals against Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas. It was an outstanding season in which Tyrese Rice was chosen as the EuroCup MVP and also earned EuroCup Finals MVP honors. Petteri Koponen joined Rice on the All-EuroCup First Team and Rimas Kurtinaitis became the first head coach to win the competition three times. That season Khimki also reached the VTB League finals, but lost to CSKA. The 2015-16 campaign saw Khimki reach the EuroLeague Top 16 and VTB playoff semifinals, before a strong campaign last year. Alexey Shved was named 7DAYS EuroCup MVP and Khimki reached the EuroCup quarterfinals and VTB finals, the latter of which secured the team’s ticket to this season’s EuroLeague regular season.
