Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv won't get a chance to win back the Israeli Cup after a shocking 99-85 road loss at Ironi Nahariya in the eighthfinals stage on Monday. Maccabi was ousted in a very early phase of the single-elimination competition for the first time in nearly 20 years. Aaron McGee paced Nahariya with 25 points and Ron Lewis followed with 23 and 8 rebounds, while Arroyo led Maccabi with 17 points. A day before Maccabi's loss, Bnei Hasharon marched to the quarterfinals with a 62-101 win over Ironi Ramat Gan. Ousmane Cisse scored 23 points and Ori Itchaki added 19 for the victors. Nahariya and Bnei Hasharon join six teams already qualified to the final eight of the competition. Cup holders Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem and defending champions Hapoel Holon advanced to the quarters automatically. Meanwhile, Ironi Ashkelon beat Kiryat Ata 98-91, Maccabi Haifa Heat edged Gilboa-Galil 75-73, Givet Shmuel smashed Rishon Lezion 98-76, which resulted in the resignation of Rishon coach Miki Dorsman, and Hapoel Afula will be the sole representative of the second division after an 87-91 road victory over Maccabi Hod Hasharon, also a second division team... | The Israeli League comes off a shocking 2007-08 season in which Hapoel Holon came out of nowhere to win the title in shocking fashion. Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv had won 14 consecutive Israeli League titles since 1993 but despite not lifting the trophy last season, it is once again the team to beat in the competition. Maccabi improves its roster with Carlos Arroyo, Chester Simmons, Jason Williams, Rodney White, D'or Fischer or Yaniv Green, while keeping Omri Casspi, Lior Eliyahu, Esteban Batista or Tal Burstein. Holon will have the tough mission to defend its title with Luis Flores, Deron Washington, Chris Watson or Curtis Withers. Meanwhile, Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem will also be a top contender with Travis Watson, Timmy Bowers, Omar Sneed, Adam Haluska or Sharon Shason. Bnei Hasharon kept Ousmane Cisse, Cookie Belcher and Meir Tapiro while adding Haminn Quaintance and Shawn James. Ironi Nahariya, featuring Raviv Limonad and Aaron McGhee, and Eldan Ashkelon, with Michael Jordan, Steve Burtt and Rahshon Turner, will fight for a spot in the Israeli League Final Four. |
