Liga UPC - Slovenia
Slovenian League, All-Star Game: December 26, 2008
The West used strong performances from a trio of Euroleague stars to march to a 115-102 victory on Friday night in the Slovenian League All-Star Game. The star-studded affair was the nightcap in a day that was a celebration of Slovenian basketball featuring four other games with the future stars of the game in that country. But it was the veteran Olimpija backcourt of Vlado Ilevski and Saso Ozbolt that shined brightest. Ilevski scored 5 in a 12-0 second-period run that gave the West a 57-48 halftime lead. Shawn King cut the gap to 6 early in the third period, however Ilievski and Ozbolt assisted each other on back-to-back three-pointers as the lead reached double figures again and despite King’s best efforts, the West cruised to victory. Ozbolt finished with 28 points and 5 assists and Ilievski produced 23 points and 8 assists. Olimpija teammate Mirza Begic added 17 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocked shots and Bojan Jovanovic of Epic Misel Postojna scored 12. King, who plays for Hopsi Polzela, carried the East with 33 points and 13 boards and Zlatorog Lasko players Nejc Strnad and Uros Lucic added 12 and 13 points, respectively. MORE |

| The Slovenian League starts with the same format it has in the last few seasons. A first regular season takes place without Union Olimpija taking part in the Adriatic League. Krka Novo Mesto and Helios Domzale, however, will be in both competitions - the Slovenian League first stage and the Adriatic League regular season. Olimpija will return to its domestic competition for the second regular season, the best four teams will advance to the playoffs, with best-of-three semifinals and best-of-five finals. Olimpija is once again the top candidate to win the competition, as it won as many as 14 titles since the Slovenian League was created in 1992. Olimpija added Jonathan Wallace, Vlado Ilievski, Vladimir Golubovic and Damjan Rudez to play with Marko Milic, Jasmin Hukic or Miha Zupan. Helios, Krka and Geoplin Slovan will be the top contenders to dethrone Olimpija. Helios landed Alvin Snow, Nicholas Jacobson and Vjekoslav Petrovic while Krka is set to compete with Smiljan Pavic, Jure Balazic or Davor Marcelic, who will turn 40 next year. Slovan features Dejan Grkovic as its main addition. Zlatorog should also find for a semifinal spot, just as it did last season. |
