Tau Ceramica is the Spanish League champion! Tau Ceramica won its second Spanish League title - its first since 2002 - by sweeping the best-of-five final playoff series against AXA FC Barcelona. Tau downed Barcelona 76-61 in front of almost 10,000 fans at Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria in Game 3 on Tuesday, rounding one of the best seasons in club history with two titles - Spanish League and Spanish Supercup - and appearances in the Spanish King's Cup final and the Euroleague Final Four. Igor Rakocevic paced the winners with 16 points. Pete Mickeal added 14 and was chosen as the Spanish League finals MVP. Mirza Teletovic had 12 while Tiago Splitter got 11 for Tau. Fran Vazquez had 12 points for Barcelona, Pepe Sanchez added 11 while Mario Kasun got 10 for the guests. Barcelona stayed in the game for 25 minutes, as Sanchez brought the guests within 43-39. Rakocevic and Mickeal stepped up to make Tau boost its margin to 67-50 and seal the outcome long the final buzzer, allowing its fans to celebrate that their team is the new Spanish champion!
Barcelona tried to surprise Tau with a tall starting lineup featuring Ilyasova at small forward. Three-pointers by Teletovic and Rakocevic gave Tau a 6-2 lead. Barcelona as many as 12 consecutive shots and even when coach Xavi Pascual had already asked for a much-needed timeout, free throws by Splitter and Mickeal extended the hosts' lead to 11-2. Mario Kasun and Fran Vazquez tried to change things for Barcelona while a three-pointer by Denis Marconato brought the guests within 15-9 after 10 minutes. Pepe Sanchez banked in a jumper to get Barcelona even closer, 16-13. Mickeal and Planinic stepped up for Tau, as Barcelona switched to a 2-3 zone defense. Barcelona found a go-to guy in Vazquez while a corner triple by Gianluca Basile tied the game, 26-26, after 17 minutes. Will McDonald scored inside while Teletovic struck from downtown for a 31-26 Tau halftime edge. The hosts improved their defense after the break while Teletovic and Splitter made it a seven-point game, 36-29. Mickeal kept pacing Tau but Sanchez singlehandedly brought Barcelona back to life, 43-39. Rakocevic had 5 points in a 7-0 run that gave Tau its first double-digit lead, 50-39. Singleton and Mickeal dunked it to set the crowd on fire, 58-48, at the end of the third quarter. Fast break baskets by Planinic and McDonald broke the game open, 62-48, early in the fourth quarter. Barcelona never recovered, as all Tau fans at Buesa Arena had time to celebrate a new Spanish League title long before the final buzzer.
