Panathinaikos is 2008-09 champ!!
Panathinaikos Athens is the Euroleague Basketball champion for 2009! Panathinaikos lifted its second crown in three years by beating last season’s champion CSKA
73-71
in a thrilling final at o2 World in Berlin on Sunday night. One of the most exciting basketball title games in history went to the wire and wasn’t decided until Ramunas Siskauskas’s attempted three at the buzzer bounced out. That allowed Panathinaikos to celebrate its fifth Euroleague title and the seventh for head coach Zeljko Obradovic, the winningest head coach in Euroleague history.
Vassilis Spanoulis was named Final Four MVP
after scoring 13, including a clutch triple with less than three minutes to play.
CSKA finishes second, missing repeat by one shot
After setting records with its seventh straight Final Four appearance and fourth consecutive title game, CSKA rallied from 23 behind to make a last-ditch back-to-back trophy try, but a three-pointer on the buzzer by Ramunas Siskauskas missed and Panathinaikos won
73-71
in a thriller.
Barcelona gets a victory and third place
With the biggest win of the weekend in the most evenly-matched Final Four ever, Regal FC Barcelona went home with third place after defeating Olympiacos
79-95
in their Sunday game between semifinals losers. At the previous night's award ceremony, Barça saw
Juan Carlos Navarro named MVP
.
Reds have to settle for fourth place
Reds have to settle for fourth place Its first trip to the Final Four in a decade ended with disappointment for Olympiacos after a two-point semifinals loss gave way to a bigger one in the third-place game, for which two starters sat out due to injury, although the Reds could celebrate the All-Euroleague First Team selection of Ioannis Bourousis.
Euroleague stars visit cancer patients
Before they ever set foot on the court at o2 World, a dozen Euroleague stars took time out visit the patients of the
Children's Cancer Station at Virchow Hospital
in Berlin, a meeting that brought smiles to the faces of all the kids - big and small - who were lucky enough to be there.
