Experts to debate regulations at Basketball Rules Summit

 In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Euroleague Basketball will convene a Basketball Rules Summit next week to debate how rules and regulations can be put to the service of making the game even better for fans. Expert professionals from across the spectrum of the sport will come together in Barcelona, Spain, to propose and debate ways to improve the spectacle, clarity and fairness of the rules for all participants and the public.
The two-day Basketball Rules Summit, starting Monday, July 2, will be part of the Euroleague Basketball Institute Technical Week, which will continue later Wednesday with the Euroleague Basketball Referee’s Commission Meeting. The Annual Euroleague Head Coaches Meeting, where some of the proposals that come out of the Basketball Rules Summit will be presented, follows on Wednesday and Thursday.
An agenda for the summit was set in a preliminary session held in June by a working group including Euroleague Basketball Director of Referees Costas Rigas, coaching legend Aito Garcia Reneses and Adriatic League President Rado Lorbek. Among the topics to be put forth in open debate during the summit's seven different sessions are court dimensions, fouls interpretations, time keeping and contacts criteria. Two of the sessions will be dedicated to subjects suggested by the invited experts, including coaches, players, presidents, sports directors, referees and experts from marketing, media and television.
The panel also includes former Euroleague-winning coaches Zeljko Obradovic and Ettore Messina; former Euroleague MVP Theo Papaloukas; Saski Baskonia club president Josean Querejeta; veteran referee Luigi Lamonica; Cibona Zagreb Sports Director Mihovil Nakic; marketing executive Glenn Chin of Most Prolific; television analyst Flavio Tranquillo; Euroleague.net/Euroleague.TV editorial director Frank Lawlor and Euroleague Basketball Chief Operations Officer Eduard J. Scott.
Their debate will endeavor to identify which current rules and regulations best serve the goals of spectacle, clarity and fairness, as well as what proposals for changes could bring an improvement to the European game in the near future.
