Officials sharpen skills at Euroleague Basketball Refereeing Summer Camp
Euroleague Director of Refereeing Costas Rigas addresses summer campThe Euroleague Basketball refereeing department is hard at work this summer with two events to help game officials from all over the continent sharpen their skills. The 2012 Euroleague Basketball Refereeing Summer Camp took place in two locations with a total of 26 referees from Euroleague Basketball, FIBA Europe, the Turkish Basketball Federation and the French Basketball Association. At the camps – both coinciding with international tournaments – referees get a chance to work with Euroleague staff in the mornings and to put that work into practice with the tournament games in the afternoons and evenings.

The first camp took place at Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul, Turkey, on June 20-24 alongside the 17th Turgut Atakol International Basketball Tournament. Euroleague Director of Refereeing Costas Rigas, retired referee great Romualdas Brazauskas, three-time Euroleague Final Four referee Juan Carlos Mitjana, and Euroleague Basketball Refereeing Manager Claudio Vitagliano ran the morning theoretical sessions, which featured seven Euroleague Basketball referees, five from FIBA Europe and two from the Turkish federation.

Euroleague Basketball Refereeing Summer Camp Overlapping with the camp in Istanbul was a second camp in Douai, France, held at Salle Des Sports Corot de Douai on June 21-24. The camp in the north of France was in conjunction with the 26th International Basketball Junior Tournament. Carl Jungebrand of Finland, a veteran of seven Euroleague Final Fours, Lars Klaar of Sweden and Christophe Vauthier of France conducted the morning sessions there, with six Euroleague Basketball referees, four from FIBA Europe and two from the French federation.

The sessions focused on a number of technical aspects to help referees improve their skills, including basketball and refereeing philosophy, mechanics and game management with an empasis on hand checking, pick-and-roll, pivot play, travelling and the act of shooting.
