Russian League, Game 2: October 13-15, 2006
Defending Russian League champions CSKA Moscow opened the season with a Eastern road trip which had its first stop in Primorie. CSKA downed Spartak Vgues 78-81 on Sunday, handing the hosts their first loss of the season after resounding home wins against Dynamo Moscow and Khimki. David Vanterpool led the winners with 24 points, Matjaz Smodis added 14 while Trajan Langdon and David Andersen each had 11 for CSKA, which trailed 46-36 at halftime. Vanterpool led the CSKA comeback, as he had 13 points in the third quarter while a three-point play by Andersen got the guests within 66-62 after 30 minutes. Back-to-back triples by Smodis put CSKA fully in charge, 70-76. Spartak managed to tie the game, 78-78, but went scoreless in the final 2 minutes. Meanwhile, a big basket by Smodis and a free throw by Langdon allowed CSKA to win the game. Meanwhile, Dynamo Moscow improved to 2-1 by beating University Surgut 60-75 on the road on Friday. Lazaros Papadopoulos led the winners with 15 points, Bojan Popovic added 13, Antonios Fotsis had 11 while Andrei Ivanov and Travis Hansen each scored 10 points for Dynamo. Three-pointers by Hansen, Popovic and Ivanov broke the game in the third quarter, as Dynamo got a 50-60 margin after 30 minutes and limited its opponents to just 10 points in the final period to seal the win. Khimki bounced back from its initial loss in Primorie by beating SibirTelekom Lokomotiv 75-85 in Novosibirsk on Saturday. Vitaliy Fridzon paced the winners with 19 points, Oscar Torres added 13, Gianmarco Pozzecco 12 and Ruben Wolkowyski 10 in an easy win for Khimki, which led 12-23 after 10 minutes and kept a safe cushion all the way until the final buzzer. In other games, Unics Kazan thrashed Standart 63-86, CSK VVS-Samara topped Ural Great 64-75 in Perm while Spartak St. Petersburg edged Lokomotiv Rostov 72-74 due to a game-winning basket by Pavel Sergeev.
