Bulgarian League, Game 5: October 27-28, 2006
CSKA Sofia edged Lukoil Academic 85-84 to take sole possession of first place in the Bulgarian League on Friday with a 5-0 record. CSKA needed overtime to get by the defending champs in a thrilling encounter, that was stopped for 40 minutes in the first quarter after Domenico Barnes broke the backboard with a fastbreak slam. CSKA's Deon Thomas tied the game with a jumper at the buzzer to force overtime, but then Todor Stoykov's three put Lukoil up 74-79 in the extra period. However Brad Traina and Dimitar Mirakovski countered with triples to put CSKA back on top. Lamont Jones had the final ball with a chance to win it for Lukoil, but was unable to find the hoop. Traina led CSKA with 17 points, while Thomas came off the bench for 16 points and 7 rebounds, and Greg Danielson added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Academic got 18 points and 6 assists from Lamont Jones, but the point guard made just 5 of his 19 attempts. Riste Stefanov and Lamont Barnes added 17 each and Barnes finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. On Saturday, newcomers Dunav scored their first ever win, while handing previously unbeaten Yambol its first loss, 78-68. Simeon Tsenov led the way with 30. Balkan and Spartak Pleven took away wins, beating respectively Rilski Sportist 68-77 and Spartak MVR 54-74. Levski Sofia used big games from Stefan Geprgiev, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Rob Preston with 17 points and 14 rebounds, to thrash Cherno More IG 96-76.
