Russian League, Game 16: January 22-27, 2007
CSKA Moscow stays atop the Russian League standings with a 12-1 record despite not having any games scheduled this weekend. Meanwhile, Unics bounced back from its road loss against the reigning Euroleague champion by beating Spartak St. Petersburg 83-71 in Kazan on Saturday. Yahor Meshcharakou led the winners with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Darjus Lavrinovic and Sergei Chikalkin each added 15 while Ksystof Lavrinovic had 11 for Unics. A 12-0 run which Darjus Lavrinovic capped with a put-back basket gave Unics a 23-11 lead after 10 minutes and the hosts kept a safe lead all the way. Khimki registered three wins this week to improve to 11-4 in the standings. On Monday, Khimki beat CSK VVS-Samara 75-95 on the road. Vitaliy Fridzon paced the winners with 21 points, Ruben Wolkowyski added 18, Vladimir Dyachok had 12 and Boris Gorenc 10 for Khimki, which led 42-75 after three quarters. Khimki added a 86-102 road win against Standart on Wednesday. Once again Fridzon led Khimki with 21 points, Maciej Lampe added 20, Ademola Okulaja had 19 while Dyachok and Melvin Booker each scored 12 points for the winners. Khimki completed its successful week by beating Dynamo Moscow Region 83-73 at home on Saturday. Kelly McCarty had 17 points for Khimki, Wolkowyski added 16, Vladimir Veremeenko had 14 and Fridzon 12 for the winners, who trailed 34-46 at the half. Veremeenko, McCarty and Wolkowyski led the Khimki comeback, while a 9-0 run which Fridzon capped with a triple sealed the win in the final period. In other games, Ural Great beat University Surgut 68-79 behind 23 points from Stanislav Makshantev.
