Adriatic League, Game 2: October 6-7, 2007
Three teams - Partizan, Buducnost and Red Star - are still unbeaten after 2 weeks in the Adriatic League. Partizan leads the standings with a 2-0 record by simply overwhelming Zagreb 109-65 in Belgrade on Saturday. Novica Velickovic paced the winners with 20 points. Nikola Pekovic and Dejan Borovnjak each added 16 for Partizan. Buducnost thrashed Zadar 100-73 in Podgorica behind 20 points from Vladimir Dragicevic, while Omar Cook nailed the game-winning three-pointer that allowed Red Star edge Vojvodina Srbijagas 82-85 in Novi Sad. Cook had 30 points to lead Red Star. Union Olimpija thrashed Helios Domzale 83-66 behind 23 points from Marko Milic, while Cibona survived a tough battle by edging Hemofarm Stada 79-74 in Zagreb with 18 points from Sam Hoskin. FMP registered its first loss, 77-76 on the road against Split. In other games, Siroki Prima pivo edged Geoplin Slovan 80-78 at home.
Partizan left no doubt about its power by simply overwhelming Zagreb 109-65 in Belgrade on Saturday. Velickovic paced the winners with 20 points. Pekovic and Borovnjak each added 16, Milenko Tepic had 12 and Cedomir Vitkovac 11 in an easy win for Partizan, that led 52-26 at halftime and boosted its margin to 83-45 after 30 minutes to seal the outcome. Buducnost also improved to 2-0 by thrashing Zadar 100-73 in Podgorica on Saturday. Vladimir Dragicevic paced the winners with 20 points, Nemanja Gordic had 15, Ivan Maras added 13 and Vladimir Dicov 10 for Buducnost. Rok Stipcevic had 15 points for Partizan while Todor Gecevski added 15. Zadar trailed 56-51 early in the second half, but a 17-1 run allowed Buducnost to break the game, 73-52, and cruise to a well-deserved win. Union Olimpija bounced back from its initial loss by thrashing Helios Domzale 83-66 in a rematch of last year's Slovenian League finals. Milic led the winners with 23 points, Maurice Bailey added 15 while Ronell Taylor got 13 in an easier than expected win for Olimpija. Bailey led a 14.1 run that broke the game open in the final minutes.
Red Star also improved to 2-0 by edging Vojvodina Srbijagas 82-85 in Novi Sad on Saturday. Cook paced the winners with 30 points on 7-of-12 three-pointers. Tadija Dragicevic added 23 while Vladimir Tica had 16 for Zvezda. Milos Bojovic had 22 points for Vojvodina. It all came down to the final seconds, in which Cook silenced the crowd with the game-winner three-pointer. FMP dropped to 1-1 due to a 77-76 road loss against Split Croatia osiguranje. Marlon Garnett paced the winners with 23 points. Dragan Labovic had 18 points for FMP, Marko Djerasimovic 12, Nemanja Protic 11 and Predrag Samardziski 10 for the guests, who led 29-40 at halftime. FMP did not trail for almost 39 minutes,but a free throw by Andrija Stepanovic gave Split a 77-76 edge. Djerasimovic missed twice in the final minute, Samardziski also missed free throws while Labovic also blew its final chance around the basket at the buzzer. Cibona improved to 1-1 by edging Hemofarm Stada 79-74 in Zagreb. Hoskin paced the winners with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Larry Ayuso added 13 points, Chris Warren had 12, Franko Kastropil 11 and Luksa Andric 10 for Cibona. Goran Jagodnik had 14 points for Hemofarm while Nebojsa Joksimovic and Boban Marjanovic each added 11 for the guests, who dropped to 0-2. Cibona led 61-50 after 30 minutes but Vladan Vukosavljevic got Hemofarm within 69-65 with 3 minutes to go. Andric followed a layup with a three-pointer to seal the outcome.
