Adriatic League, Game 17: January 12-13, 2008
It was a thrilling weekend in the Adriatic League, with several upsets and an incredible overtime game. Partizan Igokea improved to 16-1 and keeps leading the standings by beating Geoplin Slovan 87-74 at home on Sunday. Novica Velickovic led the winners with 21 points and 11 rebounds. The most thrilling game also came in Belgrade, as Crvena Zvezda edged Buducnost 115-114 in overtime on a game-winning jumper by Steven Markovic. Tadija Dragicevic led the winners with 24 points, Omar Cook added 22 and 10 assists while Mlajden Sljivancanin fired in a triple to tie the game at 100-100 at the end of regulation. Nemanja Gordic led Buducnost with 21 points. Zadar registered its 11th consecutive win by downing Siroki 76-62 at home behind 27 points from Shammel Stallworth. Hemofarm Stada improved to 11-6 by edging Union Olimpija 94-89 in Vrsac on Saturday. Rawle Marshall led the way for Hemofarm with 28 points. Meanwhile, Cibona and FMP registered respective home losses, 68-78 against Vojvodina Srbijagas in Zagreb and 72-75 against Zagreb in Zeleznik. In other games, Split CO edged Helios Domzale 85-91 behind 34 points from Marlon Garnett.
Partizan Igokea stayed way ahead everyone also with a 16-1 record by beating Geoplin Slovan 87-74 at home on Sunday. Velickovic led the winners with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Milt Palacio added 17 points, Milenko Tepic had 14 while Nikola Pekovic got 11 for Partizan, that led 59-57 after 30 minutes. Pekovic, Palacio and Cedomir Vitkovac allowed Partizan to seal the outcome, 83-68, minutes before the final buzzer. Crvena Zvezda survived a tough test by edging Buducnost 115-114 in overtime in an incredible game on Saturday. Zvezda improved to 11-6 while Buducnost dropped to 9-8. Markovic became the game hero by nailing the game-winning jumper at the end of the extra period. Dragicevic led the winners with 24 points, Cook added 22 and 10 assists, Nenad Misanovic had 18 points on 9-for-10 two-pointers, Sljivancanin got 12 and Mirko Kovac 11 for Zvezda. Gordic had 21 points to lead Buducnost. Bojan Bakic added 20 on 10-for-10 free throws, Ivan Maras and Zarko Rakocevic each got 18 while Nikola Otasevic scored 17 points for the guests, who led 92-96 in the final minute of regulation. Cook and Sljivancanin got Zvezda within 97-98. Bakic made free throws for Buducnost but Sljivancanin fired in a big triple to take the game to overtime, 100-100. Gordic stroke from downtown to give Buducnost its last lead, 112-114. Cook hit a free throw and fed Markovic for the game-winning shot. Zadar kept its winning streak alive by downing Siroki 76-62 at home. Stallworth paced the winners with 27 points on 6-for-8 three-pointers. Todor Gecevski added 14 while Corey Brewer got 13 for Zadar, that led 46-31 at halftime and kept a safe margin all the way until the final buzzer.
Hemofarm Stada improved to 11-6 by edging Union Olimpija 94-89 in Vrsac on Saturday. Marshall led the way for Hemofarm with 28 points. Goran Jagodnik added 20, Miljan Pavkovic had 15 while Nebojsa Joksimovic got 14 for Hemofarm. Maurice Bailey led Olimpija with 22 points. Jasmin Hukic added 17 while Marko Milic and Chris Booker each had 14 for the guests, whose last lead came at 21-22 on a dunk by Goran Dragic. Marshall and Joksimovic allowed Hemofarm to get a 49-42 lead at halftime.Hukic and Booker brought Olimpija within 83-79 midway through the fourth quarter, but a 8-0 run allowed Hemofarm to seal the outcome down the stretch. Cibona dropped to 9-8 due to a shocking 68-78 road loss against Vojvodina Srbijagas. Ivan Ivanovic led Vojvodina with 22 points. Larry Ayuso had 16 points for Cibona, Chris Warren added 12, Marin Rozic 11 and Vedran Vukusic 10. Cibona led 41-28 at halftime but Vojvodina returned to the game an a 0-10 run gave the guests a 59-64 lead. Free throw accuracy allowed Vojvodina to escape with a big win. FMP moved down to 8-9 because of a 72-75 home loss against Zagreb. Jakov Vladovic led Zagreb with 19 points. Dragan Labovic and Bojan Krstovic each had 14 points for FMP, Marko Djerasimovic added 12 and Predrag Samardziski 11. Zagreb rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit and free throws by Petar Babic gave the guests a 72-75 edge. Krstovic missed from downtown at the buzzer.
