Zalgiris Kaunas wins 2008 Lithuanian championship! Zalgiris Kaunas repeated as the Lithuanian League champion on Saturday with a thrilling 75-81 overtime win over rival Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius. Zalgiris held L. Rytas scoreless for the final two-and-a-half minutes of overtime to win the game and take the best-of-seven series 4-1. The title is Zalgiris’s fifth in the last six seasons. DeJuan Collins led the way for the newly crowned champs with 15 points and 5 assists. Kenan Bajramovic started and ended a 10-0 L. Rytas run that bridged the first two periods and put the hosts up 31-20. The lead grew to 13 before settling at 42-34 by halftime. Zalgiris narrowed the gap in the third quarter, but did not take the lead until a Marcus Brown layup made it 62-63 midway through the fourth quarter. The game remained tight from that point. Jonas Maciulis made it 69-69 with 25 seconds to go and after a timeout, L. Rytas was unable to get a shot off on the final possession. The lead switched hands a number of times on the first possessions of the extra session, however after Bajramovic made it 75-74 with 2:55 remaining, L. Rytas would not score again, a Marko Popovic triple gave Zalgiris the lead for good and free throws by Collins and Paulius Jankunas iced the win. Maciulis added 14 points for the winners, Eurelijus Zukauskas scored 11 and Popovic and Damir Markota had 10 each. Markota also grabbed 12 rebounds. Mindaugas Lukauskis paced L. Rytas with 19, Bajramovic scored 16, Hollis Price and Marijonas Petravicius scored 13 apiece and Arturas Jomantas posted 11 points and 8 rebounds. MORE
