Khimki vs.CSKA (photo: www.bckhimki.ru) Khimki won the Russian Cup for the first time on Thursday by taking down Russian champion CSKA Moscow 85-67 in Kazan. Maciej Lampe carried his team with 23 points and 13 rebounds – both game highs – and Kelly McCarty added a double-double for the winners. CSKA started strong, building a 14-19 lead by the end of the first period and increasing it to double figures before Khimki got back to 35-37 by halftime. Former CSKA prospect Anton Ponkrashov completed Khimki’s comeback with a triple to give it a 40-39 lead early in the third period. McCarty with a dunk and a put-back basket helped Khimki build a modest elad, but soon a 7-0 spurt with points from Daniel Ewing, Lampe and Mike Wilkinson helped Khimki go ahead by 10. David Andersen finally got CSKA on track, however a Ewing triple made it 58-45 at the end of the third quarter. A Lampe three stretched the lead to 16 and despite the best efforts of Trajan Langdon and Anatoly Kashirov, Khimki continue to pull away. Ewing again from downtown made it 70-51 and a McCarty slam that pushed the advantage to 76-55 set off the celebrations and ended CSKA’s three-year reign as Russian Cup holder. Ewing finished with 4 three-pointers on the way to 18 points and 5 assists, McCarty tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds and Ponkrashov also scored 16 for Khimki. Andersen led CSKA with 17 points and 7 boards, Theo Papaloukas was good for 13 points and 6 assists and Ramunas Siskauskas added 11.
