Spanish League, Game 27: March 26-27, 2008
Three games were decided by a basket and all but one game by 10 points or less in another exciting round of Spanish League action on Wednesday and Thursday. Real Madrid maintained its three-win lead over second place DKV Joventut by edging Iurbentia Bilbao Basket 78-79 on the road behind 23 points and 13 rebounds from Felipe Reyes. Alex Mumbru scored the go-ahead basket with 8 seconds to go and Axel Hervelle made it stand up with a crucial blocked shot at the buzzer, helping the defending champs improve to 23-4. Joventut kept pace by downing MMT Estudiantes 97-89 as Rudy Fernandez drilled 5 three-pointers en route to 30 points. Euroleague quarterfinalists Tau Ceramica and AXA FC Barcelona remained neck-and-neck in third place at 19-8 with respective wins. Tau topped Unicaja on the road 77-89 as Igor Rakocevic peppered the nets for 25 points, while Gianluca Basile fired in 5 triples to lead Barca past CB Granada 85-75. However another Final Eight team, Akasvayu Girona, suffered a stunning 89-98 loss at he hands of Ricoh Manresa. Carl English scored 25 and Kornel David added 14 as Kalise Gran Canaria recorded a 92-85 win over Grupo Capitol Valladolid. In other games, ViveMenorca defeated Cajasol 75-77 on the road and Polaris World CB Murcia edged Grupo Begar Leon 63-60.
Real Madrid maintained its three-win lead over second place DKV Joventut by edging Iurbentia Bilbao Basket 78-79 on the road behind 23 points and 13 rebounds from Felipe Reyes. Alex Mumbru scored the go-ahead basket with 8 seconds to go and Axel Hervelle made it stand up with a crucial blocked shot at the buzzer. Charles Smith heated up in the second period and helped Madrid take a 32-41 halftime lead, but Iurbentia never faltered and remained close after the break. A three-point barrage in the fourth quarter led by Paco Vazquez helped Bilbao grab a 1-point lead, but Mumbru and Hervelle took care of the game in the closing seconds as Madrid earned its 23rd win. Smith finished with 13 points, Raul Lopez added 12 and Kerem Tunceri had 10 for Madrid, while Vazquez paced Bilbao with 13. Joventut kept pace by downing MMT Estudiantes 97-89 as Rudy Fernandez drilled 5 three-pointers en route to 30 points. Estudiantes actually led by 2 going into the fourth quarter, but the hosts heated up led by Rudy and Demond Mallet to ensure the win. Mallet posted 16 points, Edu Hernandez-Sonseca had 12 and Lubos Barton 11 for Joventut. Carlos Suarez netted 24 points and Sergio Sanchez scored 21 in defeat.
AXA FC Barcelona bounced back from a home defeat to Cajasol by beating CB Granada 85-75 at the Palau Blaugrana. Dylan Page’s success in the paint helped Granada take a 19-26 lead early in the second period, but Gianluca Basile and co. regrouped to take a 46-40 halftime lead. Jaka Lakovic set the tone in the third quarter and Fran Vazquez and Mario Kasun scored in the paint as the hosts built a 22-point lead. Some late shooting by Samo Udrih helped Granada get back to 10, but it was too little, too late. Basile finished with 21 points on 5-for-6 three-point shooting, Kasun added 13 points and Lakovic and Roger Grimau had 10 apiece. Udrih netted 20 and Page added 17 for Granada.
Pamesa Valencia won in a tuneup for the ULEB Cup Final Eight, disposing of Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 80-71 in a game that was much closer than the finals core would indicate. Fuenlabrada 57-66 midway through the fourth quarter, but Ruben Douglas’s hot shooting sparked a 9-0 run and the defense of Albert Oliver and Fred House cooled down the visitors enough for Pamesa to push on for the win. Douglas finished with 22 points, Albert added 16 and House and Ruben Garces scored 13 each. Tom Wideman paced Fuenlabrada with 23. However another Final Eight team, Akasvayu Girona, suffered a stunning 89-98 loss at he hands of Ricoh Manresa. Akasvayu seemed in total control with a 72-61 lead late in the third quarter, but the visitors dominated the final stanza for an important come-from-behind win. Toby Bailey led the charge with 25 points and 8 rebounds and Josh Asselin added 19 for Manresa. Arriel McDonald scored 22 for Akasvayu, Fernando San Emeterio added 17, Victor Sada 16 and Marc Gasol had 14 points and 10 rebounds in defeat.
