Huseyin Besok, Charles Gaines and Chris Owens dominated the paint for a total of 55 points at Galatasaray Cafe Crown downed Fenerbahce Ulker 88-77 in the Istanbul derby. The result saw red-hot Galatasaray win its fourth straight Turkish League game to improve to 8-2, keeping it in second place and one victory behind leader Turk Telekom, which downed Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi on the road 66-93 behind Erwin Dudley’s 24 points and 16 rebounds. Efes Pilsen was shocked by Alpella 98-92 for its fourth loss of the season. Despite leading for three quarters, Efes conceded 31 points in the last period. Young center Omer Asık led Alpella with 25 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. Besiktas Cola Turka struggled against Kepez Belediyesi, but won 97-89 in overtime to remain tied for third place. Sinan Guler and Preston Shumpert stepped up in the extra period to lead Besiktas to its seventh win. Meanwhile Gary Neal and Quinton Hosley combined for 56 points to lead Pinar Karsiyaka past Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 83-78, keeping it also in third place at 7-3. In other games, Ricardo Marsh scored 24 to lead Antalya Buyuksehir Belediye over Banvit 83-80, TTNet Beykoz got 14 points and 19 boards from Curtis Withers to top Darussafaka 71-74 and Oyak Renault climbed out of the cellar by downing CASA TED Kolejliler 70-76 thanks to 23 points and 17 boards from John Randle.
Huseyin Besok, Charles Gaines and Chris Owens dominated the paint for a total of 55 points at Galatasaray Cafe Crown downed Fenerbahce Ulker 88-77 in the Istanbul derby. The hosts played once again without the injured Tufan Ersoz, but Fenerbahce had two important players out, Ibrahim Kutluay and Semih Erden, due to injury. Galatasaray made an impressive start to the game with an 8-0 run through 6 points by Owens, but Fenerbahce tied the game later in the period at 14-14 on a James White jumper. Cuneyt Erden’s three-pointer ended the first quarter with the hosts up 22-18. Galatasaray’s defensive pressure grew in the second period and when Gaines converted a basket-plus-free throw, he extended the lead to 9 points, though Fener managed to get within 39-35 by halftime. Besok opened the second half with another three-pointer as Galatasaray started to get huge support with the noisy 3,000 fans at Sahenk Arena. Owens three later in the period made it 62-47 and his layup ended the third quarter at 64-53 for Galatasaray. The hosts cooled down in the last quarter, but the duo of Owens and Gaines were enough to keep Galatasaray comfortably ahead. Spectacular dunk followed spectacular dunk midway through the period as the lead peaked at 78-61 on the way to a Galatasaray victory. Owens finished with 22 points plus 7 rebounds, Besok had 18 points and 8 boards and both Gaines and Erden added 15 each. Erden dished 8 assists, too. Mirsad Turkcan was the only big man standing for Fener with 18 points plus 10 boards; White ended up with 16 and both Willie Solomon and Demir Kaan added 14 each.
Efes Pilsen was shocked by Alpella 98-92 on the Asian side of İstanbul, at the Kadıkoy Caferaga gym for the fourth loss of its season. Despite leading for three quarters, Efes conceded 31 points just in the last period to suffer the loss. Young center Omer Asık led Alpella with 25 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. Erwin Dudley scored 24 and grabbed 16 rebounds, while his compatriot Michael Wright scored 21 and Khalid El Amin added 17 points plus 8 assists. Michael Jones scored 17 points for Mersin in defeat. Besiktas Cola Turka struggled to beat Kepez Belediyesi of Antalya 97-89 in overtime. The home team went into the last period up 59-56, but Kepez managed to tie it at 80-80. The great efforts of Sinan Guler and Preston Shumpert in the overtime period kept the win home.
