Belgian League, Regular Season, Game 25: March 21, 2009
League leader Dexia Mons-Hainaut suffered a 96-82 road loss at Belgacom Liege Basket, but remains atop the Belgian League standings with a 17-6 record. However defending champ Spirou Basket Charleroi and Generali Okapi Aalstar both won and are hot on Mons’s tails with 16-6 records. Justin Cage paced Liege with 24 points while Christopher Hill added 20 for the winners. Elton Nesbitt led Mons with 28 points on 6-for-11 three-point shooting. Liege led 29-16 after 10 minutes and boosted its margin to 52-36 at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Liege kept a safe edge all the way until the final buzzer. Spirou Basket edged VOO Verviers-Pepinster 60-54 in a topsy-turvy game. Charleroi got 35 points off the bench to spark the come-from-behind win. Wes Wilkinson led the way with 12 points and 8 rebounds and veteran Andre Riddick added 10 for Charleroi. Marcus Dove netted 15 for Pepinster in defeat. Spirou led 44-43 after 30 minutes but allowed just 11 points in the fourth quarter to get another home win. Okapi had to battle hard to beat Base BC Oostende 95-88 at home. Stephane Pelle led the way for Okapi with 24 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Robert Hite led Oostende with 17 points, Matt Haryasz added 16, Michael Bauer 15 while Ivan Paunic and Dontaye Draper each had 12 for the guests, who led 61-63 after 30 minutes. Trevor Huffman had 12 points early in the fourth quarter to put Okapi ahead for good. In Saturday’s other game, Optima Gent downed Spotter Leuven 50-65 behind 18 points from Brandon Freeman.
