German League semifinals, Game 1: May 31, 2009

Oldenburg beat Brose Baskets 82-74 at home in Game 1 on Sunday. Je'kel Foster led the winners with 22 points. Jason Gardner added 18, Rickey Paulding had 14, Milan Majstorovic got 12 while Ruben Boumtje Boumtje pulled down 10 rebounds for Oldenburg. Predrag Suput led Bamberg with 24 points. Elton Brown added 23 while Demond Greene had 12 for Brose. Majstorovic buried consecutive three-pointers midway through the fourth quarter while free throw accuracy allowed Oldenburg to get a 1-0 lead in the series. Meanwhile, Telekom upset Alba Berlin 71-73 at the o2 World in Game 1 also on Sunday. Brandon Bowman and Vincent Yarbrough paced the winners each with 14 points. Ken Johnson added 12 while Johaness Strasse had 10 for Bonn. Julius Jenkins led Alba with 21 points. Adam Chubb added 11 while Blagota Sekulic had 10 for the hosts. A three-pointer by Yarbrough with 43 seconds remaining allowed Bonn to steal the win down the stretch.

In Olbenburg, Brose had a strong start but Foster and Paulding combined for all points in a 12-0 run that allowed the hosts to get a 21-14 edge early in the second quarter. A layup by Boumtje Boumtje soon made it a double-digit game, 28-17. Suput and Filiberto Rivera stepped up to bring the guests within 30-25 at halftime. Brown stayed on fire after the break, getting some help from Greene and Suput to complete Brose's comeback, 40-43. Three-pointers by Majstorovic and Marko Skecic allowed Oldenburg to regain the lead, 50-48, after 30 minutes. Majstorovic had 8 points in a 9-2 run that put the hosts ahead for good, 70-63, with under 3 minutes remaining. Gardner, John Goldsberry, Foster and Daniel Hain combined for 8-of-8 free throws in the final 43 seconds to seal the outcome.

In Berlin, Jenkins and Sekulic stepped up for Alba early in the game to make the hosts get a 16-7 margin late in the first quarter. An outstanding EJ Rowland and three-pointers by Yarbrough and Bowman got Bonn back in track, 16-17, after a 0-10 run. Yarbrough stayed on fire and got some help from Alex King and Johnson to make it an eight-point game, 28-36, at halftime. A jumper by Winsome Frazier gave Bonn its biggest lead, 32-46. Ansu Sesay and Jenkins combined for 11 points in a 14-0 run that tied the game, 46-46. Bowman and Strasser took over to restore a 55-64 Bonn lead with 8 minutes to go. An unstoppable Jenkins and Aleksandar Nadjfeji fueled a 16-4 run that gave Alba a 71-68 edge with 2 minutes remaining. Alba went scoreless in crunch time, however, while free throws by Rowland and a big triple by Yarbrough allowed Bonn to regain the lead, 71-73, already in the final minute. Jenkins missed a mid-range, game-tying jumper at the buzzer.
