German League finals, Game 3: June 21, 2009
Telekom Baskets Bonn regained the upper hand in the German League finals on Sunday by beating EWE Baskets Oldenburg on the road 78-81. Bonn took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series in which all three games have been won by the visiting side. Bonn hosts Game 4 on Tuesday with a chance to win the German championship for the first time in club history. E.J. Rowland scored with 10 seconds left to break a 78-78 and Patrick Flomo blocked Rickey Paulding’s shot with 5 seconds to play. Rowland then sank a free throw in the closing seconds and Oldenburg never got a last shot off. John Bowler paced the winners with 19 points, Rowland added 17, Johannes Strasser 15 and Vincent Yarbrough 14. Paulding finished with 27 points, Ruben Boumtje Boumtje posted 13 points and 8 rebounds and Je'Kel Foster had 13 points and 5 assists in defeat.
Oldenburg dominated early, scoring the game’s first 6 points and taking an 18-5 lead behind strong play by Paulding and Boumtje Boumtje, however Bowler sparked a 0-9 Bonn response to get within 20-16 after 10 minutes. The second quarter followed a similar pattern as Paulding pushed Oldenburg out to a 40-27 advantage and Rowland brought Bonn back to make it 44-39 at the halftime break. Yarbrough and Brandon Bowman heated up in the third quarter and back-to-back triples by Yarbrough and Strasser gave Bonn its first lead on the last play of that period, 60-61. The opening minutes of the deciding period saw the lead change hands four times before Bonn took a small lead. The visitors never led by more than 5 as Oldenburg stayed close and came back to tie the game on a Paulding triple with 49 seconds remaining. However the hosts would not score again and Rowland came up big in the cluth to seal Bonn’s win.
