Greek League, Regular Season, Game 19: February 18-19, 2009
Olympiacos and Panathinaikos cruised to midweek victories in Week 19 of the Greek National League and proved themselves ready for the Greek Cup final, which will be held on Sunday at Hellinikon Olympic Hall. Led by Ioannis Bourousis who finished with 25 points and 11 boards, the Reds overwhelmed AEK 75-95 on the road to remain atop the Greek League standings with an 18-1 record. The Greens thrashed Panellinios at home 93-64 behind 15 points from Sarunas Jasikevicius. Keydren Clark bagged 13 points as Aris BSA 2003 defeated PAOK 50-57 on the road and regained third place in front of Panellinios. Panionios On Telecoms escaped from Larissa with a 67-79 victory, while Maroussi Costa Coffee downed Olympia Athienitis Larissa 69-49. Kavala edged Egaleo Estia 63-50 and Trikala edged VAP Kolossos Rhodes 86-87 on the road, as William Avery scored from the arc with 4 seconds to go.
At Sporting Hall, AEK led 30-25, but Olympiacos used a 4-12 run to take a 34-37 lead and came up big in the second half to seal its 75-95 victory. Ioannis Bourousis bagged 25 points on 7-for-9 two-point shooting and 3-for-5 three-point shooting and bagged 11 boards in only 24 minutes on the court. Nikola Vujcic posted 14 points and Milos Teodosic added 10 points. Janero Pargo didn’t play due to an injury on his foot. Nikos Hatzis led AEK scored 20 points, Dimitris Papanikolaou and DJ Thompson had 13 points apiece.
At OAKA, Panellinios led by 21-22 at the end of the first quarter, but Panathinaikos found its tempo in both ends, scored 12 unanswered points and didn't allow the visitors to react en route to a 93-64 win. Sarunas Jasikevicius led the Greens with 15 points, including 4-for-5 three-point shooting, Kostas Tsartsaris posted 13 points, while Mike Batiste, Antonis Fotsis and Dimitris Diamantidis had 11 points each. For Panellinios Anthony Grundy was the only player to score in double digits with 14 points.
In a defense-oriented match in Pylaia, Aris escaped with a 50-57 victory over archrival PAOK. Keydren Clark scored 13 points and Nikos Argyropoulos posted 10 for the visitors, while Kenny Gregory led the hosts with 15 points and Christos Harissis added 11 points. Thanks to its strong defense, Maroussi Costa Coffee topped Olympia Athienitis Larissa at home 69-49. Jarod Stevenson scored 12 points and Kostas Charalampidis added 10 points for the hosts, while Marios Batis bagged 11 points for the visitors. Panionios on Telecoms soared up to 8-21 at the end of the first period and didn’t find any trouble after that against AE Larissa on the road, 67-79. Branko Cvetkovic and Lonny Baxter posted 16 points apiece, Ivan Zoroski scored 14 points and Aaron Miles and Levon Kendall added 10 points each for the winners. Fotis Labropoulos bagged 18 points for AE Larissa.
