Portuguese League playoffs, semifinals, Game 4: May 24, 2009
It will all go down to the wire in one of the most exciting playoff series in Portuguese League history. Academica edged regular season winners Sport Lisboa Benfica 90-87 in triple overtime in Game 4 on Sunday to tie the best-of-five series at 2-2. Benfica hosts Game 5 on Wednesday. It was the second triple-overtime thriller in this series. Karlton Mims led the winners with 29 points. Fernando Sousa added 23, Diogo Simoes had 16 while Manuel Johnson got 13 for Academica. Sergio Ramos led Benfica with 35 points. Seth Doliboa played all 55 minutes and added 17 points while Elvis Evora got 13 for the guests. Both teams tied at 57-57 at the end of regulation. Sousa missed free throws late in the first overtime for a 66-66 tie after 45 minutes. Incredibly enough, a missed free throw by Santos allowed Sousa to bury an unbelievable buzzer-beating midcourt shot to take the game to a third overtime, 76-76. Mims and Johnson sealed the outcome with free throws in the final 13 seconds.
