Slovenian Cup quarterfinals, Day 2: February 20, 2009
Richard Shields - Krka Novo MestoElektra Esotech and Krka Novo Mesto reached the Slovenian Cup semifinals and are set to battle each other for a spot in the title game tomorrow. Union Olimpija and Helios Domzale will face each other in the other semifinal also on Saturday. Elektra made it to the semifinals by topping Mercator in the first game on Friday. Nikola Ivanovic led the winners with 21 points. Dejan Cup added 16 while Luka Sjekloca posted a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds for Elektra. Mensud Julevic led Mercator with 17 points while Igor Jokic added 15. Back-to-back layups by Cup ignited a 9-0 run that Ivanovic capped with a triple, as Elektra made Mercator go scoreless in the opening 5 minutes. Jokic and Mirko Mulalic brought Mercator within 17-11 after 10 minutes. Cup and Ivanovic stepped up to make Elektra restore a double-digit lead, 36-26, at halftime. Jokic tried to change things for Mercator after the break but Ivanovic, Cup and Ernest Novak kept Elektra way ahead, 55-45, after 30 minutes. Back-to-back triples by Julevic ignited Mercator's comeback. He soon struck again from downtown and tied the game with a layup, 64-64. Cup and Ivanovic sealed the outcome in the final 2 minutes. Krka needed overtime to edge Geoplin Slovan 83-84 in the last quarterfinal game on Friday. Richard Shields led the winners with 29 points. Smiljan Pavic added 18, Davor Marcelic had 11 while Bojan Krivec had 10 for Krka. Marko Lekic led Slovan with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Dejan Delic added 17 points while Dejan Cigoja added 11. A layup by Marcelic and a big dunk by Shields gave Krka a 35-39 halftime edge. Slovan used an 11-0 run that Delic capped with a layup to get a 53-45 lead late in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Dejan Mlakar made it a double-digit game, 58-47, but Krka was not done. Shields and Pavic fueled their team's comeback while a big triple by Marcelic gave Krka a 66-68 edge. A three-point play by Lekic put Slovan back ahead, 72-71, with a minute to go. Shields made free throws with 40 seconds to go, enough to force overtime, 73-73. It all came down to the final seconds of the extra period, as Lekic gave Slovan a 83-82 edge. Free throws by Jure Balazic with 17 seconds to go allowed Krka to stay alive in the competition.
