Tau Ceramica and Kalise Gran Canaria extended their respective stays atop the Spanish League standings with wins Thursday. Tau bested DKV Joventut 83-97 thanks to big games from Igor Rakocevic and Tiago Splitter. Rakocevic netted 24 points and Splitter posted 21 points and 12 rebounds for Tau, which outscored Joventut in each of the four periods. Gran Canaria needed overtime to outlast Bruesa GBC 96-92. Joel Freeland scored 6 of his 20 points in the extra period and Mario Fernandez was perfect in 4 tries from the line in the final minute to ice the win. Tau and Gran Canaria both improved to 7-1 – the same amount of wins, but one loss less than Unicaja, which bested Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 83-89 on Wednesday as Marcus Haislip scored 22. Regal FC Barcelona checks in at fourth place with a 6-2 mark after it handles Ricoh Manresa 70-57. The inside duo of Ersan Ilyasova and Fran Vazquez paired for 23 points, 22 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for Barca. Meanwhile Neven Spahija earned his first win on the Pamesa Valencia sidelines as Shammond Williams came through with 17 points and 6 assists in an 82-66 win over Real Madrid. In other games, CB Murcia downed Cajasol 85-75 behind Taquan Dean's 20 points, CAI Zaragoza bested CB Granada 80-65 thanks to a 22-point effort from Larry Lewis and MMT Estudiantes topped ViveMenorca 71-61 as Pancho Jansen came through with 16 points.
Tau Ceramica bested DKV Joventut 83-97 thanks to big games from Igor Rakocevic and Tiago Splitter. Rakocevic netted 24 points and Splitter posted 21 points and 12 rebounds for Tau, which outscored Joventut in each of the four periods. The game was tied at 44-44 late in the second period and Tau led by just 6 at halftime, but took the lead to double figures early in the third period and extended it to 61-76 before coasting to victory. Sergi Vidal and Mirza Teletovic added 12 points apiece and Pablo Prigioni had 10 for the winning team. Bracey Wright peppered the nets for 22 to lead Joventut, while Demond Mallet recorded 13 points and 10 assists, Edu Hernandez-Sonseca added 12 points and Jan Jagla had 11. Kalise Gran Canaria needed overtime to outlast Bruesa GBC 96-92. Joel Freeland scored 6 of his 20 points in the extra period and Mario Fernandez was perfect in 4 tries from the line in the final minute to ice the win. Bruesa started strong and led by double digits in the opening period, but the hosts slowly came back, setting the stage for a tense fourth quarter. Carl English had a chance to win it from the line in the closing seconds of regulation, but missed twice and the game went to an extra period, where Freeland and Fernandez helped seal the win. Marcus Norris and Sitapha Sivane added 17 and 16 points, respectively, for Gran Canaria and English netted 15. Andy Panko paced Bruesa with 25.
Unicaja earned an 83-89 victory over Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada on Wednesday as Marcus Haislip scored 22. Unicaja dominated the game in the second period to take a 32-54 lead at the break, however Fuenlabrada adjusted its defense after the break and behind the play of Brad Oleson, Saul Blanco and Leo Mainoldi, the hosts tallied 30 points in the third period to close the gap. Fuenlabrada got within 4, but Unicaja answered with a 2-10 charge and then kept the hosts at bay down the stretch to take the win. Jiri Welsch and Boniface NDong added 13 points apiece. Thomas Kelati collected 12 and Robert Archibald had 10 for Unicaja. Blaco paced Bruesa with 18. Neven Spahija earned his first win on the Pamesa Valencia sidelines as Shammond Williams came through with 17 points and 6 assists in an 82-66 win over Real Madrid.
