Belgian League, Regular Season, Game 1: October 3, 2009
The Belgian League regular season started this weekend with defending champion Spirou Basket Charleroi being the team sitting out in this nine-team round-robin competition. Base BC Oostende needed overtime to edge Belgacom Liege Basket 101-96 at home on Saturday. Trevor Huffman led the winners with 26 points. Vladan Vukosavljevic had 24 and 15 rebounds, Caleb Green added 16 points while Matt Lojeski got 12 for Oostende. Michael Green and Adrian Banks each had 21 points for Liege, that rallied from a 14-point deficit to take the game to overtime, 85-85. Green and Vukosavljevic put Oostende ahead for good, 94-88, while a final basket by team captain Veselin Petrovic allowed all Oostende fans to get a free hamburger - as the team broke the 100-point barrier. Antwerp Giants defeated Optima Gent 80-75 behind 24 points from Bryan Hopkins. Meanwhile, Dexia Mons-Hainaut had to battle hard to edge Generali Okapi Aalstar 74-79 with 22 points from Brandon Costner and 20 from Craig Callahan. Mons outrebounded Aalstar by 41-26. Last but not least, PP Leuven Bears edged VOO Verviers-Pepinster 87-88. Kyle Spain led the winners with 19 points. At 85-88, Darnell Wilson had 3 free throws with 2 seconds remaining but missed one of them.
