German League finals, Game 5: June 17, 2010
Brose Baskets Bamberg claimed its third German League championship on Thursday by holding off a late Deutsche Bank Skyliners charge for a 72-70 victory in Game 5 of the best-of-five finals series. Anton Gavel scored 16 points, John Goldsberry added 15 on 10-for-11 free throw shooting and Tibor Pleiss added a double-double for the new champs. The victory gives Bamberg a ticket to the Euroleague next season. Predrag Suput drilled a triple on the game’s first possession and soon added a second basket as Bamberg raced to a 10-0 start. The lead reached 20-6 on a pair of Goldsberry free throws. A 0-9 charge to open the second quarter put Frankfurt right back in the game at 22-17, but in little time Brian Roberts had the hosts back up by 10. Pascal Roller’s triple just before the halftime buzzer helped the Skyliners to 32-27 at the break. Gavel had the host hand at the start of the third quarter as Brose Baskets outscored Frankfurt 11-2 to take a commanding lead. The visitors played on and behind Aubrey Reese and Seth Doliboa clawed their way back within 49-46 before Goldsberry made it 52-46 at the end of the third quarter. The Skyliners continued to challenge throughout the fourth quarter and Roller silenced the local crowd with a triple that made it 63-62 with less than two minutes to play. Doliboa went to the line for Frankfurt down 1 with 57 seconds on the clock, but missed both. At the other end a Gavel triple gave Bamberg a 4-point cushion with 33 seconds remaining. Roller kept the Skyliners’ hopes alive with a three to make it 70-69 with 16 second left. Frankfurt fouled Goldsberry, who made 1, but then missed for the first time after 9 successful free throws in the game. Bamberg fouled Roller, who also made just 1 free throw and Frankfurt never got another chance. Suput finished with 10 points and Pleiss tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Roller led Frankfurt with 10 points, Doliboa had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Reese netted 13 in defeat.

German League, Season 2009-10
The German League remains one of the most unpredictable competitions around the continent, with a lot of teams able to beat anyone, anywhere. The fact that four different teams have won the title in the last four years says it all. Defending champion EWE Baskets Oldenburg will try to end that and to do so has kept its main players from last year like Jason Gardner, Rickey Paulding, Milan Majstorovic and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje, while adding Josh Carter at small forward. Alba Berlin also opted to keep most of its main players to gain consistency from the very beginning. Julius Jenkins, Rashad Wright, Blagota Sekulic and Immanuel McElroy are joined by newcomer Kenan Bajramovic to lead Berlin. Telekom Baskets Bonn underwent severe roster changing with new arrivals like Jared Jordan, Tim Ohlbrecht, Chris Ensminger and Bryce Taylor. Brose Baskets, Deutsche Bank Skyliners and New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig are one step behind, trying to reach as high as possible. The Skyliners rely on Seth Doliboa, Aubrey Reese and Derrick Allen to get back to their glory days. Brose Baskets brought back Casey Jacobsen and kept Robert Garrett and Predrag Suput, while Braunschweig landed German sensation Heiko Schaffartzik. EnBW Ludwigsburg, MEG Goettingen, Artland Dragons and Eisbaeren Bremenhaven should fight for the remaining playoff spots. As usual, expect the unexpected, since anything can happen in the German League, always all a source for surprises and major upsets.
