Greek League playoff, Quarterfinals, Game 1: May 1, 2010
Euroleague semifinalist Olympiacos started the Greek League playoffs with a home win over Aris as Linas Kleiza scored 19 points and Josh Childress added 17. The Reds won 75-63 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series and will try to finish it with a sweep on Monday in Thessaloniki. At OAKA, defending Greek champion Panathinaikos thrashed Panionios 92-57 behind 17 points from Milenko Tepic. Kostas Kaimakoglou netted 16 points as Maroussi Costa Coffee overwhelmed Kolossos Rhodes 87-68. And Panellinios survived in a thriller against PAOK, 71-69, thanks to Devin Smith’s 18 points. All four Game 2s will be held on Monday, while Game 3 - if needed – will take place on May 6, with the exception of the Olympiacos-Aris series, which would postponed till May 13 due to the Reds’ participation in the Euroleague Final Four.
At the Peace and Frienships Stadium, Aris surprised the hosts and 6 straight three pointers and also used an effective match-up zone defense to create a 21-31margin. Then Olympiacos improved its game both in defense and offense and went on a 30-7 charge for a 51-38 lead en route to a 75-63 win. The Euroleague’s best scorer, Linas Kleiza, bagged 19 points and the Greek League’s leading scorer Josh Childress recorded a double-double of 17 points and 11 boards. Sofoklis Schortsanitis got 10 points and Milos Teodosic posted 9 points and 5 assists. For Aris, Keydren Clark chipped in 14 points, Matt Walsh had 10 points and 5 boards and Andrew Betts added 8 points, 8 boards and 4 assists.
At OAKA, Panarthinaikos, which topped the regular season standings with a 25-1 record, didn’t have any problems to dash Panionios, 92-57. The Greens led 25-13 after eight minutes, but the visitors cut the margin to 30-22, however Panathinaikos didn’t allow them to get any closer and scored back-to-back three pointers and soared up to 49-28 by halftime. During the fourth quarter, the Greens opened the gap to 39 points and finally recorded a 92-57 victory. Milenko Tepic posted 17 points, Mike Batiste had 12 points and 7 boards, Drew Nicholas netted 12 and Kostas Tsartsaris added 4 points and 9 boards. For Panionios, which didn’t have the injured Giannis Kalambokis, Dejan Borovnjak scored 12 points, Ivan Zoroski contributed 11 and Giannis Athineou added 10.
Maroussi played a perfect game in the first half on the way to crushing Kolossos Rhodes 87-68. The hosts made 7 of 10 shots from behind the arc had a run of 23 unanswered points and led 30-2 after only nine minutes of play to finish the game early. At the end of the first half, the hosts were up 50-28 and never looked back. Kostas Kaimakoglou scored 16 points and grabbed 7 boards, Jared Homan recorded 14 points and 9 boards, Pat Kalathes had 13 points and Billy Keys posted 10 points and 9 assists. For the visitors, Thodoris Zaras scored 14 points and Nikos Pappas added 11 points.
At Kipseli, Panellinios dominated the game versus PAOK from the beginning and led 32-17, but the visitors proved themselves very competitive and didn’t surrender. Lazaros Papadopoulos cut the margin to 70-69 with one minute to go. Then Tomas Delininkaitis missed a three-point shot and Roderick Blakney scored a free throw to seal the win for his team, 71-69. Devin Smith shined once again with 18 points, 11 boards and 4 assists. Chris Owens had 10 points and 8 boards and Kostas Charalampidis added 10 points. For PAOK, Todor Gecevski posted 15 points and 7 boards, Kenny Gregory bagged 13 points, Lazaros Papadopoulos recorded 12 points and 7 boards and Chris Monroe got 11 points and 4 assists.
