Hapoel Jerusalem celebrates Winner Cup (Photo: basket.co.il)Hapoel Jerusalem snagged the first title of the new Israeli basketball season, upsetting archrival Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv 86-80 in the Winner Cup final in the Israeli capital. Former Maccabi player Tre Simmons came up big with a the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:53 to go and another one with 1:12 on the clock to put Hapoel up 80-76 and Maccabi was unable to get any closer. Simmons led Hapoel with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Dijon Thompson posted 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals for the winners, Yuval Naimi added 16 points and 7 assists and Leo Lyons tallied 12 points and 8 boards. Alan Anderson paced Maccabi with 26 points, Guy Pnini recorded 16 points and 5 steals and D’Or Fischer finished with 10 points. It was a roller coaster affair that saw Maccabi storm out to an 8-20 start only for Hapoel to come back and tie the game early in the second quarter and build a 50-35 halftime advantage. Maccabi came out for the second half with Pnini on fire to get right back in the game. Tel Aviv held a 59-63 lead heading into the fourth quarter, which proved to be a thriller, featuring seven lead changes and five ties in the last 10 minutes. But just as it appeared the game would go to the wire, a pair of Simmons threes lifted his team to a hard-fought win and a brand new trophy.
