Israeli League, Regular Season, Game 8: December 12-14, 2009
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv is perfect through eight weeks in the Israeli League following an 85-102 road win over Ironi Ashkelon. The champs held a 17-point margin already at the break and will travel to Moscow for a key Euroleague Group C game with a clear mind. Raviv Limonad scored 23 points including 5 three pointers without a miss for Maccabi, while Guy Pniny added 21 points. Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem recorded its third win in a row and this one was rather easy, 109-86 over Hapoel Afula in front of its fans to take a 6-2 record and stay right behind Maccabi before the key Eurocup game in Zadar this Tuesday. Tre Simmons had 20 points, Leo Lyons added 19 and Brandon Hunter scored 18 without a miss in addition to 9 rebounds for Jerusalem. Hapoel Holon finally picked up its first win of the season after seven losses in a row with a 77-74 home victory over Bnei Hasharon. Dwayne Mitchell had 22 points and 7 boards for the winning side, which used missed free throws by the visitors in the last seconds to smile for the first time this season. Holon's win left Ironi Ramat Gan the last team in the standings without a win, after head coach Daniel Gutt's team lost 80-69 to Maccabi Haifa on the road. Haifa led by 17 at the break and used 24 points and 10 rebounds by Davon Jefferson to take a 6-2 record and stay tied with Hapoel. Rishon Lezion got 23 points from Aaron McGhee to score a 78-68 home triumph over Ironi Nahariya as both teams are now tied at 2-6 down the table.
After the loss against Caja Laboral on Thursday night at Nokia Arena, Maccabi Electra traveled south to Ashkelon to face the local team, which was minus the injured Omar Sneed. Maciej Lampe rested this week due to the foreigner rules in the BSL, but saw his team take an 85-102 win to keep a perfect record. A second quarter run bestowed Maccabi a 35-52 halftime lead, and a comfortable cushion for the second half. Raviv Limonad scored 23 points including 5 three pointers without a miss for Maccabi, while Guy Pniny added 21 points, David Bluthenthal followed with 14, Stephane Lasme had 12 with 4 blocks and Chuck Eidson scored 10. Jimmy Baxter led Ashkelon with 22 points. The visitors scored 12 three pointers at 60% in addition to 69% inside the arc. The first three minutes told a different story when Ashkelon took a shocking 7-0 lead, but before the end of the first quarter the lead was already yellow and blue. Baxter brought his team within 18-19 early in the second quarter only to see a 1-16 Maccabi run in which Limonad scored 9. The Israeli guard was on fire and added 8 more before the break to give the champs a 30-52 lead shortly before the break. Another blitz by the locals early in the second quarter caught Maccabi asleep, and the margin stood on accessible 59-47. Early in the fourth Baxter scored a jumper to make it 73-63. However D'Or Fischer and Eidson led a 13-2 run to double the margin and give Maccabi a safe distance before the final buzzer.
On Saturday night, Hapoel Migdal scored a 109-86 home win over Afula to give its fans some sweet taste before the trip to Zadar. Hapoel recorded a 167 team index rating with no less than 6 players score in double digits. Already at the break the local fans saw their team lead 55-35 in a one sided game. Tre Simmons had 20 points, Leo Lyons added 19, Brandon Hunter scored 18 without a miss in addition to 9 rebounds, Dijon Thompson added 15 with 7 assists, Yuval Naimy had 14 and Yogev Ohayon finished with 11. Jermaine Hall scored 20 for the losing side followed by Gur Porat with 17. After less than five minutes, Hapoel held a 17-6 lead. Afula cut it down to 6 only to see a rain of points in a 14-2 run that put a clear sign on this match. Naimy and Lyons took over in the third quarter and Hunter scored at ease before Hapoel made one last run to cap a one-sided night.
