Italian League, Game 7: November 21-22, 2009
Montepaschi Siena keeps leading the Italian League standings with a 7-0 record by thrashing Lottomatica Roma 83-58 at home on Sunday morning. Nikos Zisis led the winners with 16 points. David Hawkins added 15, Shaun Stonerook had 12, Romain Sato got 11 while Terrell McIntyre contributed 10 for Montepaschi. Andre Hutson and Ricky Minard each had 12 points for Lottomatica, that went scoreless for 7 minutes in the third quarter and lost all options to defeat the reigning champions. Angelico Biella moved up to 5-2 by downing NGC Medical Cantu 86-93 on the road on Saturday, three days before its Eurocup debut. Pietro Aradori led 6 Biella players in double digits with 20 points. Armani Jeans Milano improved to 4-3 by edging Banca Tercas Teramo 81-83 on the road on Saturday. Mason Rocca led the winners with 15 points and 9 rebounds but Marco Mordente put the victory on ice with the go-ahead free throws. Drake Diener and Goran Jurak each had 15 points for Teramo. Benetton dropped to 4-3 due to a 86-94 home loss against Cimberio Varese. In other games, Virtus Bologna thrashed previously undefeated Air Avellino 73-55, Carife Ferrara topped Martos Napoli 66-59, Sigma Coatings Montegranaro downed Scavolini Spar Pesaro 73-57 while Pepsi Caserta beat Vanoli Cremona 97-74.
Montepaschi Siena stayed undefeated and improved to 7-0 by thrashing Lottomatica Roma 83-58 at home on Sunday morning. Zisis led the winners with 16 points. Hawkins added 15, Stonerook had 12, Sato got 11 while McIntyre contributed 10 for Montepaschi. Hutson and Minard each had 12 points for Lottomatica, that led 16-19 after 10 minutes. Herve Toure shined in the second quarter and a free throw by Hutson gave Lottomatica its last lead, 37-38. A buzzer-beating triple by McIntyre put Montepaschi ahead, 40-38, at halftime. Lottomatica went scoreless for 7 minutes after thebreak. Hawkins and Sato capped a 16-0 run that broke the game open, 53-38. Zisis and Sato shined in the fourth quarter to keep Montepaschi out of trouble until the final buzzer. Angelico Biella moved up to 5-2 by downing NGC Medical Cantu 86-93 on the road on Saturday. Aradori led 6 Biella players in double digits with 20 points. Massimo Chessa added 17, Pervis Pasco had 14, Carl Embo Oma got 13, Joe Smith 12 and Sven Schultze 10 for Biella, that downed 15-of-26 three-pointers and outrebounded Cantu by 24-33. Biella trailed 43-34 near halftime. A 0-11 run brought the guests back to life while Pasco and Aradori joined forces late in the third quarter to give the guests a 59-64 edge after 30 minutes. Cantu rallied and got a 69-67 edge but Aradori, Smith and Ona shined in crunch time to lead Biella to a key road win.
Armani Jeans Milano improved to 4-3 by edging Banca Tercas Teramo 81-83 on the road on Saturday. Rocca led the winners with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Massimo Bulleri added 14 points while Mike Hall had 12 for AJ. Diener and Jurak each had 15 points for Teramo. Giuseppe Poeta and Ryan Hoover added 14 apiece while Valerio Amoroso got 12 for the hosts. Rocca and Mancinelli fueled a 3-13 opening run that allowed Milano to keep a 20-27 edge after 10 minutes. Three-pointers by Hall, Jeff Viggiano and Jonas Maciulis helped the guests to boost their margin to 41-53 at halftime. Jurak, Hoover and Diener led a 14-2 run that brought Teramo back to life, 55-57. A triple by Amoroso gave Teramo a 81-78 lead. Free throws by Rocca and Mordente helped Milano to escape with a big win. Benetton dropped to 4-3 due to a 86-94 home loss against Cimberio Varese. Jobey Thomas led the winners with 27 points. Gary Neal led Benetton with 22 points. Cartier Martin added 14 while Donatas Motiejunas had 11 for the hosts, that rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to get within 80-84 with under 2 minutes left. Thomas had 6 points in crunch time to win it for Varese.
