Italian League, Game 11: December 19-20, 2009
Montepaschi Siena leads the Italian League standings with an 11-0 record. Pepsi Caserta and AJ Milano tie for second place at 8-3. Montepaschi stayed undefeated by thrashing Sigma Coatings Montegranaro 97-66 in Siena on Sunday. Ksistof Lavrinovic led the winners with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Armani Jeans improved to 8-3 by edging Vanoli Cremona 80-72 in Milano on Sunday. Marco Mordente led 5 AJ players in double digits with 14 points. Lottomatica Roma bounced back from recent losses and moved up to 4-7 by downing Cimberio Varese 67-84 on the road on Sunday morning behind 19 points from Ibby Jaaber. Benetton Treviso improved to 6-5 by edging Virtus Bologna 78-80 on the road on Sunday. Gary Neal led the winners with 22 points and became the game hero by hitting a buzzer-beating jumper to make Benetton steal a big road triumph. Banca Tercas Teramo improved to 6-5 and confirmed its good moment by downing Martos Napoli 85-71 at home on Sunday with 20 points from Virgil Stanescu. Angelico Biella dropped to 6-5 due to a 73-76 home loss against Scavolini Spar Pesaro. In other games, NGC Medical Cantu beat Carife Ferrara 72-84 while Air Avellino edged Pepsi Caserta 73-66.
Montepaschi stayed undefeated by thrashing Sigma Coatings Montegranaro 97-66 in Siena on Sunday. Lavrinovic led the winners with 23 points and 8 rebounds. David Hawkins added 19 points, Nikos Zisis added 15, Romain Sato got 12 while Terrell McIntyre contributed 10 in an easy home win for Montepaschi, that led 47-33 at halftime and kept full control of the game after the break to stay out of trouble until the final buzzer. Lottomatica Roma moved up to 4-7 by downing Cimberio Varese 67-84 on the road on Sunday morning. Jaaber led the winners with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Kennedy Winston and Ricky Minard each added 17 points while Angelo Gigli and Luca Vitali had 10 apiece for Lottomatica, that trailed 54-49 late in the third quarter. Winston, Minard and Jaaber fueled a 1-19 run that allowed Lottomatica to seal the outcome, 55-68, midway through the fourth period. Armani Jeans improved to 8-3 and now ties for second place by edging Vanoli Cremona 80-72 in Milano on Sunday. Mordente led 5 AJ players in double digits with 14 points. Mason Rocca, Marius Petravicius and Morris Finley each added 12 while Stefano Mancinelli had 10 for Milano, that had a solid 40-26 lead at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Cremona only rallied once the outcome was clear.
Benetton Treviso improved to 6-5 by edging Virtus Bologna 78-80 on the road on Sunday. Neal led the winners with 22 points - including a buzzer-beating jumper to win it down the stretch. Davor Kus added 21, Sandro Nicevic had 16, Kelvin Rivers got 10 while CJ Wallace pulled down 10 rebounds for Benetton, that led 28-40 at halftime behind an outstanding Kus. Virtus rallied in the second half and it all came down to the final minute, in which Dusan Vukcevic followed a layup with a three-pointer to tie it at 78-78. Benetton called timeout and Neal nailed the game-winning jumper at the buzzer. Banca Tercas Teramo improved to 6-5 and confirmed its good moment by downing end-of-the-table Martos Napoli 85-71 at home on Sunday. Stanescu paced the winners with 20 points. Bobby Jones added 18, Ryan Hoover had 14 while Valerio Amoroso got 10 for Teramo, that used an outstanding second quarter to get a 57-47 halftime lead. Teramo improved its defense after the break and managed to cruise to a well-deserved, important win. Angelico Biella dropped to 6-5 due to a 73-76 home loss against Scavolini Spar Pesaro. Sam Van Rossom, Marques Green and Eric Williams each had 16 points for Scavolini. Joe Smith led Biella also with 16 points, Matteo Soragna added 14 and Pietro Aradori 13. It all came down to the final seconds, in which Aradori and Massimo Chessa missed from downtown in the game's final possession.
