Armani Jeans Milano downed Pepsi Caserta on the road Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Italian League semifinals, joining defending champion Montepaschi Siena, which routed NGC Medical Cantu 100-73 the night before. Chris Monroe was the go-to-guy for Armani, scoring 22 points 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Jamie Arnold added 19 points and 9 rebounds off the bench, Mike Hall scored14 points and Mason Rocca contributed 10. Ebi Ere led Caserta with 25 points, Fabio Di Bella had 16 and Andrea Michelori 11. The game was tied at 38-38 at halftime and it remained close in the third quarter. Milano entered the fourth quarter up 58-60 after Hall hit a mid-range jumper. Jumaine Jones gave a 69-66 cushion to the hosts early in the last quarter, but a 0-7 run led by Arnold and a three pointer from Monroe made it 69-73. The Milano newcomers scored the last 15 points for their side, sealing their outstanding performance with back-to-back dunks and escaping with a crucial win. On Tuesday, Montepaschi downed Cantu 100-73 in the first game of the semifinals at Pala Mens Sana. Romain Sato led the way with 23 points, David Hawkins and Ksistof Lavrinovic added 15 apiece, Terrell McIntyre scored 11 and Henry Domercant 10 for the winners. Maarten Leunen and Jerry Green scored 14 each for Cantu and Vladimir Micov had 13. Montepaschi used an amazing 22-8 start to lead 31-17 at the end of the first quarter. Domercant from beyond the arc increased the cushion to 49-30 en route to a 51-37 halftime lead. The game was practically over when the started the third quarter with three consecutive triples – two of them from Hawkins – to sail in front 60-37 and then lead 84-54 after 30 minutes.
