Russian Cup Quarterfinals, Second leg: February 20, 2010
Keith Langford - BC KhimkiCSKA Moscow, BC Khimki Moscow Region, UNICS Kazan and Spartak St. Petersburg completed sweeps of their respective Russian Cup quarterfinals series on Saturday with home wins to keep their cup dreams alive. CSKA, which entered its second leg with a 12-point cushion from its first leg win at Krasnye Krylya, cruised to a 75-55 home win as head coach Evgeny Pashutin divided the minutes equally among his roster and saw 11 players score. Trajan Langdon did not play to rest a minor injury. The Russian champs started strong and led 25-9 after 10 minutes and were able to enjoy the rest of the contest without any tension. Ramunas Siskauskas paced CSKA with 11 points and Anton Ponkrashov and Zoran Planinic added 10 apiece. Andrey Ivanov scored 11 for Krasnye Krylia in defeat. Khimki edged Lokomotiv Kuban 82-80, but the tie was not as close thanks to a 71-79 road win in the opening leg. Keith Langford scored 23 and Kelly McCarty 21 to lead Khimki, which targets its second cup after winning in 2008. Carlos Cabezas added 13 for the winners. Gerald Green paced Lokomotiv with 21 points. UNICS rocked BC Triumph Lyubertsy 83-58 after winning the first leg by just 2. The hosts took charge early by taking a double-digit cushion in the first quarter and expanding it to more than 30 in the third quarter. Artem Kuzyakim was the high scorer for UNICS with 15 points, Maciej Lampe and Kresimir Loncar added 14 each and Igor Tkatchenko scored 11 for Kazan. Vadim Panin led Triumph with 20 points. And in the closest of the games, Spartak held off Dynamo Moscow 71-69 after winning the opening leg by just 2. It was a back and forth game that saw Spartak’s aggregate lead hit 10 after 10 minutes, but Dynamo came back and trailed 37-36 at halftime. Spartak pulled away again in the third quarter, however the Dynamo defense limited the hosts to just 9 fourth quarter points. Alas that would prove 4 too many as Spartak celebrated its place in the semis. Milovan Rakovic led the winners with 20 points and 9 rebounds and Zakhar Pashutin followed with 13. Sergey Bykov carried Dynamo with 27 points and Aleksey Savrasenko added 15.
