Spanish League, Game 13: December 19-20, 2009
Regal FC Barcelona leads the Spanish League standings with a 12-1 record. Real Madrid is now second at 11-2, Caja Laboral is right behind at 10-3 with Power Electronics Valencia not far behind at 9-4. Laboral took the big showdown in the Spanish League this weekend by thrashing Madrid 80-62 in Vitoria on Saturday. Tiago Splitter paced the winners with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Barcelona became the exclusive leader atop the standings by downing CB Murcia 84-72 at home on Sunday behind 18 points from Fran Vazquez. Power Electronics VLC went down to 9-4 due to a 83-52 road loss against Cajasol on Sunday. Cajasol now ties for fifth place with Joventut, that thrashed Meridiano Alicante 97-77 in Badalona on Sunday to move up to 8-5. Uros Tripkovic sank 6 of his 7 three-pointers in the second quarter to break the game open. Unicaja improved to 6-7 by thrashing Blancos de Rueda Valladolid 67-85 on the road on Saturday. Gran Canaria 2014 moved up to 5-8 by downing Xacobeo Blu:sens 80-64 at home on Sunday with 20 points and 12 rebounds from Will McDonald. Bizkaia Bilbao Basket dropped to 4-9 due to a 77-71 road loss against Estudiantes. In other games, CB Granada beat Lagun Aro GBC 88-76 while Suzuki Manresa edged Ayuda en Accion Fuenlabrada 81-84 behind 25 points from Roman Montañez.
Caja Laboral took the big showdown in the Spanish League this weekend by thrashing Real Madrid 80-62 in Vitoria on Saturday. Laboral improved to 10-3 while Madrid dropped to 11-2. Splitter paced the winners with 17 points. Pau Ribas added 13, Carl English had 12 while Mirza Teletovic got 10 for Laboral. Louis Bullock led Madrid with 13 points. Darjus Lavrinovic added 11 while Jorge Garbajosa had 10 for the guests, that got their last lead at 5-6. Three-pointers by Sean Singletary, Fernando San Emeterio and English allowed Laboral to get a 24-16 lead after 10 minutes. The hosts led 35-28 at halftime and used a 10-0 run to break the game open, 45-28, soon after that. Madrid never recovered, allowing Laboral to add a big home win. Barcelona moved up to 12-1 by downing CB Murcia 84-72 at home on Sunday. Vazquez led the winners with 18 points. Juan Carlos Navarro added 14 while Roger Grimau had 11 for Barcelona, that led 48-42 midway through the third quarter. Grimau, Navarro and Erazem Lorbek allowed Barcelona to get a 67-50 margin, enough to control the game all the way until the final buzzer. Joventut kept tying for fifth place at 8-5 by thrashing Meridiano Alicante 97-77 in Badalona on Sunday. Tripkovic led the winners with 26 points on 7-of-10 three-pointers. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca added 22, Clay Tucker had 15 while Antonio Bueno got 10 for Joventut. Tripkovic sank 6 triples in the second quarter to make Joventut get a 20-point lead, 60-40, at halftime. Alicante did not recover, allowing Joventut to get closer to clinch a King's Cup final eight spot.
Unicaja improved to 6-7 by thrashing Blancos de Rueda Valladolid 67-85 on the road on Saturday. Omar Cook led the winners with 18 points. Taquan Dean added 17 while Georgios Printezis, Carlos Jimenez and Joel Freeland each had 10 for Unicaja, that led all the way since 7-4. Valladolid managed to get within 61-68 with 5 minutes left. Robert Archibald, Cook and Jimenez stepped up in crunch time to seal the outcome, 63-78, long before the final buzzer. Power Electronics Valencia went down to 9-4 due to a 83-52 road loss against Cajasol on Sunday. Earl Calloway led the winners with 21 points. Victor Claver had 12 points for Valencia while Kosta Perovic added 11 and 10 rebounds for the guests, that committed 29 turnovers. Valencia led 6-13 early but a 22-1 run allowed Cajasol to get full control of the game, 28-14. Another 15-0 Cajasol run broke the game open, 67-35, as the hosts cruised to their eighth win in the last 10 games. Gran Canaria 2014 improved to 5-8 by downing Xacobeo Blu:sens 80-64 at home on Sunday. McDonald paced the winners with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Marcus Norris added 15 points, Melvin Sanders had 11 while Sitapha Savane and James Augustine each had 10 for Gran Canaria. Augustine added 12 rebounds for the hosts, that took off early in the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run that sealed the outcome, 66-49. Bizkaia Bilbao Basket dropped to 4-9 due to a 77-71 road loss against Estudiantes. Blake Ahearn led Estudiantes with 18 points in his last game with the club, which he left for personal reasons. Marko Banic had 28 points for Bilbao while Javi Salgado and Ronnie Seibutis each added 11. Free throws by Ahearn and Nik Caner-Medley allowed Estudiantes to seal the outcome in the final seconds.
