Spanish League, Game 20: January 30-31, 2010
Regal FC Barcelona keeps leading the Spanish League standings with a 18-2 record. Regal FCB bounced back from its road loss in Valencia by overwhelming Gran Canaria 2014 105-55 at home on Sunday. Juan Carlos Navarro paced the winners with 24 points on 6-of-8 three-pointers in just 21 minutes. Jaycee Carroll led Gran Canaria with 23 points. Caja Laboral is second at 17-3 while Real Madrid is right behind at 16-4. Laboral downed Meridiano Alicante 90-75 in Vitoria on Sunday with 19 points from Tiago Splitter. Meanwhile, Madrid defeated Unicaja 84-67 in the Spanish capital on Sunday. Novica Velickovic led the winners with 18 points. Unicaja led 50-51 after 30 minutes but Sergio Llull had 8 points in a 15-2 run that sealed the outcome. Bizkaia Bilbao Basket went down to 5-15 due to a 85-72 road loss against Ayuda en Accion Fuenlabrada. Power Electronics Valencia dropped to 13-7 because of a 87-76 road loss against Blancos de Rueda valladolid. Meanwhile, DKV Joventut went down to 11-9 because of a 83-68 road loss against Asefa Estudiantes. In other games, Cajasol downed Lagun Aro GBC 47-56, Suzuki Manresa thrashed CB Murcia 72-55 while CB Granada topped Xacobeo Blu:sens 97-88 behind 21 points from Joe Ingles.
Regal FC Barcelona did not find any trouble to thrash Gran Canaria 2014 105-55 at home on Sunday. Navarro paced the winners with 24 points on 6-of-8 three-pointers in just 21 minutes. Fran Vazquez added 12, Gianluca Basile had 11 while Boni Ndong, Pete Mickeal and Erazem Lorbek each got 10 for Barcelona. Carroll led Gran Canaria with 23 points. A layup by Will McDonald gave Gran Canaria a 10-14 lead early in the game. It didn't last long, however, as Mickeal, Jaka Lakovic and Lorbek fueled a 16-2 run that gave Barcelona its first double-digit lead, 26-16. Barcelona boosted its margin to 46-26 on a three-pointer by Navarro and got a 21-point halftime lead, 51-30, on another shot from downtown by Basile. Barcelona improved its lead to 75-41 after 30 minutes and cruised to yet another convincing home win. Real Madrid downed Unicaja 84-67 at home on Sunday. Velickovic led the winners with 18 points. Rimas Kaukenas added 14 while Llull and Darjus Lavrinovic each had 10 for Madrid. Robert Archibald had 14 points for Unicaja while Joel Freeland and Juan Dixon each added 13. An unstoppable Marko Jaric allowed the hosts to get a 22-16 lead after 10 minutes. Back-to-back baskets by Felipe Reyes boosted Madrid's lead to 31-18 early in the second quarter. Unicaja rallied late in the third quarter, as Berni Rodriguez and Freeland fueled a 1-9 run that Zab Dowdell capped with a fast break layup to complete the guests' comeback, 50-51, after 30 minutes. Velickovic and Lavrinovic sparaked a 15-2 run in which Llull had 8 points, including consecutive triples for a 65-52 Madrid lead. Unicaja kept trying but Madrid had already cruised to a well-deserved win.
Caja Laboral improved to 17-3 by topping Meridiano Alicante 90-75 in Vitoria on Sunday. Splitter paced the winners with 19 points. Pau Ribas added 17 on 5-of-5 three-pointers, Mirza Teletovic had 15, Carl English got 13 while Walter Herrmann contributed 11 for Laboral. Both teams were tied at 50-50 midway through the third quarter but several three-pointers by Teletovic and English allowed Laboral to get a 71-62 edge after 30 minutes. Back-to-back triples by Herrmann sealed the outcome, 82-66, as Alicante never recovered. Bizkaia Bilbao Basket went down to 5-15 due to a 85-72 road loss against Ayuda en Accion Fuenlabrada. Gerald Fitch led the winners with 19 points. Marko Banic led Bilbao with 18 points. Alex Mumbru added 14, Chris Warren had 12 while Janis Blums got 11 for Bilbao. An outstanding Banic allowed Bilbao to get a 41-45 halftime edge. Bilbao still led 51-55 after 30 minutes but a 17-0 run helped Fuenlabrada to get the lead for good until the final buzzer. Power Electronics Valencia dropped to 13-7 because of a 87-76 road loss against Blancos de Rueda valladolid. Robert Battle led 6 Valladolid players with 18 points. Rafa Martinez led Power VLC with 17 poins. Serhiy Lishchuk added 15, Nando De Colo had 14 while Marko Marinovic got 12 for the guests, that trailed 60-42 late in the third quarter and never recovered. DKV Joventut went down to 11-9 because of a 83-68 road loss against Asefa Estudiantes. Nik Caner-Medley led the winners with 15 points. Uros Tripkovic had 14 points for Joventut while Luka Bogdanovic added 11 for the guests, that trailed 41-36 at halftime. A rain of three-pointers kept Joventut in the game, 63-55, late in the third quarter, but a 12-0 run allowed Estudiantes to seal the outcome.
