European domestic leagues review: June 14-19, 2010
The last of Europe’s top domestic leagues came to an end this week with three more Euroleague giants celebrating titles. The last in action was the
Italian League
, where Montepaschi Siena conquered its fourth consecutive title and fifth of the decade by downing Armani Jeans 69-93 in Game 4 on Saturday in Milan to sweep the series. The win made it 21 playoff victories in a row for Montepaschi. Terrell McIntyre was named the finals MVP after leading Siena with 28 points on 6-of-9 three-point shooting. Perhaps the most thrilling finish was in the
Spanish League
, where a Fernando San Emeterio three-point play with 0.5 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Caja Laboral to a thrilling 79-78 victory and a 3-0 sweep of Regal FC Barcelona to win the club’s third Spanish League title. Tiago Splitter was named finals MVP after recording 14 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in Game 3. Meanwhile the
Serbian League
crown went to Partizan for the club’s ninth consecutive domestic crown. Partizan swept the best-of-five finals against Hemofarm Stada after winning Game 3 via forfeit. The team celebrated the victory with its fans at Pionir Hall on Friday. And Brose Baskets Bamberg claimed its third
German League
championship on Thursday by holding off a late Deutsche Bank Skyliners charge for a 72-70 victory in Game 5 of the best-of-five finals series. Casey Jacobsen was named finals MVP, though in Game 5 it was Anton Gavel with 16 points and John Goldsberry with 15 on 10-for-11 free throw shooting that led the way.

Another week of domestic league finals resulted in five more clubs celebration championships in their home leagues and naturally Euroleague and Eurocup clubs were chief among those singng. Euroleague Final Four regular CSKA Moscow lifted its eighth consecutive
Russian League
trophy by sweeping its best-of-five title series against BC Khimki Moscow region. It was CSKA’s 17th crown since the Russian League was created in 1992 and its 41st counting Soviet Union titles. Ramunas Siskauskas shined in the clincher with 29 points. Cibona Zagreb won its 15th
Croatian League
championship by beating KK Zadar 95-73 to complete a comeback from a 0-2 deficit to win the best-of-five series 3-2. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 21 points and Marko Tomas added 18 for the newly crowned champs. Cholet Basket won the
French League
championship for the first time Sunday by beating Le Mans 81-65 in the title game in Paris. Antywane Robinson led six Cholet scorers in double figures with 15 points and Mickael Gelabale added 11 points and 9 rebounds as the team dominated the second half to cap an excellent season in which it was also the regular season champ. Spirou Basket Charleroi won its third straight
Belgian League
crown by routing Belgacom Liege Basket 74-49 in Game 4 to win the best-of-five series 3-1. The hosts held Liege to 4 second-quarter points en route to a 35-22 halftime lead and put the game away with a 26-12 third quarter. Dwayne Broyles led the winners with 18 points. Meanwhile in the
Slovenian League
, it was the underdog that celebrated as Krka Novo Mesto won the championship for the first time in seven years. Veteran Davor Marcelic scored 24 points and Smiljan Pavic posted 14 points, 17 rebounds and 4 blocked shots as Krka beat Union Olimpija 79-87 at Hala Tivoli in the Slovenian capital to wrest the title away in the fifth game of the best-of-five finals. Four more teams etched their names into the parade of 2010 domestic champions in the first week of June, including a pair of winners of All-Euroleague slugfests between bitter rivals. Panathinaikos won its eighth straight Greek League championship on Sunday after escaping the Peace and Friendship Stadium with a 69-76 victory over Olympiacos to win the best-of-five
Greek League
finals 3-1. The title is Panathinaikos’s 31st and its 12th in the last 13 seasons. Mike Batiste shined with 20 points and 11 rebounds in an eventful Game 4 that started with a 45-minute delay due to incidents inside and outside the court and it was interrupted twice. Earlier in the week, Fenerbahce Ulker routed outgoing champion Efes Pilsen 76-51 to regain the
Turkish League
championship. Mirsad Turkcan scored 16 and Roko Ukic added 15 as FB Ulker took the best-of-six series 4-2 for its third league title in four seasons and fourth overall. CEZ Basketball Nymburk bested BK Prostejov 75-67 to win the club’s seventh straight
Czech League
championship. Petr Benda scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a dominant performance as Nymburk won Game 5 and took the series 4-1. In the

The parade of 2010 domestic champions hit full throttle this week as seven leagues crowned their kings. Among the winners were two Euroleague sides, Asseco Prokom Gdynia and Lietuvos Rytas. Prokom won the

for the seventh consecutive season, capping a memorable playoff run by sweeping Anwil Wloclawek with a 79-80 win in Game 4, becoming the first team to go through the Polish playoffs without a loss since 1988. David Logan was named finals MVP. L. Rytas claimed the
Lithuanian League
title by outlasting rival Zalgiris 80-71 in a do-or-die Game 7 of the finals. Milko Bjelica scored 24 points to lead the winners, as the club claimed its fifth Lithuanian League crown and won in back-to-back seasons for the first time. In the

will meet in that competition’s finals after sweeping their respective semifinals series. Defending champion Efes Pilsen punched its ticket to the finals with an 88-96 road win over Besiktas ColaTurka to take the best-of-five series 3-0 as Charles Smith shined with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Fenerbahce Ulker knocked out Banvit with a 65-70 win in Game 3 as Roko Ukic and Oguz Savas netted 13 points apiece. In the

, Brose Baskets became the first team to make it to the semifinals by edging Telekom Baskets Bonn 82-84 on the road to sweep the best-of-five series. Predrag Suput paced the winners with 21 points. The
Croatian League

The calendar has struck May and now every day brings with it news from the top domestic leagues in Europe, where a number of Euroleague and Eurocup clubs edge closer to end-of-the season trophies. The excitement could not be any greater in the
Lithuanian League
, where rivals Lietuvos Rytas and Zalgiris Kaunas will meet again in the finals. L. Rytas reached the finals by sweeping Juventus behind the red-hot Martynas Gecevicius, while Zalgiris brushed aside Siauliai thanks to as Tadas Klimavicius recorded a double-double in the clincher. Meanwhile several other leagues are set to begin the semifinals. In the

Belgian Cup

The tension seems to rise in European basketball from week to week at this point in the season as teams start to clinch playoff spots and homecourt advantage in domestic leagues, those same leagues come to an end and playoff series begin. This week featured some of all those things. In a crucial
French League
contest, Cholet Basket edged Le Mans 83-85 on the road in overtime to match the home team for the best record in the league at 20-7. Sammy Mejia and Mickael Gelabale combined for 40 points – including the clutch baskets in overtime – to lift Cholet to its second 2-point win over Le Mans this season. Efes Pilsen wrapped up first place in the
Turkish League
with a resounding 64-99 victory at Kepez Belediye. Igor Rakocevic scored 18 and Preston Shumpert 17 to lead six Efes scorers in double figures as the defending champs improved to 25-3, giving them a three-win lead over rival Fenerbahce Ulker for the top spot with two games to play. The Newcastle Eagles repeated as the
British League
champions after finishing the regular season with 31-5 record. Newcastle won 17 consecutive league games to finish the regular season. In the
Lithuanian League

Although playoffs are on everyone's mind in most of the top domestic leagues in Europe, two of them took a pause in the action to cup celebrations. Predrag Suput dominated to lift Brose Baskets Bamberg to its first
German Cup
title in nearly two decades. Suput produced 26 points and 8 rebounds to lift Bamberg over Deutsche Bank Skyliners 76-75 in the title game in Frankfurt on Sunday. A few hundred kilometers to the south, Starwings Basel celebrated winning the
Swiss Cup
after downing defending champion SAV Vacallo 91-83 in overtime. Vernard Hollins led the way for the winners with 25 points. The
Spanish League
featured a showdown of Eurocup hopefuls as Power Electronics Valencia downed Bizkaia Bilbao Basket 83-75 in each team's last game before the Eurocup Finals in Vitoria, Spain. Kosta Perovic led the winners with 19 points. Also in Spain, Regal Barcelona produced another win over Real Madrid, 78-73, as Euroleague Sportingbet MVP for April Juan Carlos Navarro netted 20. Barca recently eliminated Madrid in the Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs. Final-Four bound Partizan Belgrade joined the

As the calendar hit April, teams throughout Europes top domestic leagues continue to tussle for playoff spots and home-court advantage in those games. One team that has it all taken care of is Montepaschi Siena, which has wrapped up the top spot in the
Italian League
. Montepaschi scored a 72-96 away win over Cimberio Varese on Saturday to improve to 23-1 – giving it seven wins more than second placed Canadian Solar Bologna with six games to play. Romain Sato led six scorers in double figures for Montepaschi with 16 points. Ventspils and Siauliai joined Lietuvos Rytas and Zalgiris in the
Baltic League
final four by surviving their respective best-of-three quarterfinal playoff series. Ventspils edged VEF Riga 81-80 at home in Game 3 as Mateo Kedzo scored 20, while Siauliai topped Rock 92-80 thanks to 14 points each from Derrick Low and Raitis Grafs. The Baltic League final four starts on April 23. In the
French League
, Antoine Diot scored 22 points and JP Batista added 21 as Le Mans remained atop the standings by beating Rouen 86-76. Le Mans, 19-6, holds a one-win lead over second placed Cholet Basket. Elsewhere, Union Olimpija survived a tough test in the

At a time when the top clubs in Europe are focused on their respective upcoming clashes in both the Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs and the Eurocup Quarterfinals, several of them showed they are in the winning frame of mind over the weekend in their domestic leagues. Each of the four active Euroleague quarterfinalists booked wins. Partizan finished the

in second place behind only Cibona on a tiebreaker after taking down Siroki HT Eronet 80-69 in the regular season finale. Aleks Maric netted 12 points to pace a balanced Partizan attack in which every player scored from the field. In the

, Regal Barcelona, Real Madrid and Caja Laboral registered respective wins.Barca overcame Fuenlabrada 71-66 as Pete Mickeal scored 17 points. Jorge Garbajosa, Pablo Prigioni, Ante Tomic and Louis Bullock scored 11 points apiece to lead Madrid over DKV Joventut 76-82. , where Zalgiris edged its chief rival Lietuvos Rytas 85-82 in Kaunas on Saturday as Tadas Klimavicius led the winners with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Zalgiris and L. Rytas finished the regular season with 16-2 records and qualified directly for the competition’s final four. Meanwhile in the
Italian League
, defending champion Montepaschi Siena has already clinched a playoff berth even though there are still nine games to play. Montepaschi improved to 21-0 by beating Angelico Biella 97-65 as Romain Sato led five Montepaschi scorers in double figures with 17 points. , where it had to battle harder than expected to edge CB Granada 79-72 at home on Sunday behind 23 points from Pete Mickeal. And in the

With one more game left to decide the last remaining spots in the Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs, five teams still have everything to play for. Those came five teams all showed they were ready for this week’s showdowns by tuning up with victories in their domestic leagues. In Group E, Maroussi and Partizan Belgrade vie for one ticket to the quarters. Maroussi showed it is ready by taking down Trikala 78-65 in the
Greek League
. Jamon Lucas scored 21 points and Kostas Kaimakoglou added 16 as Maroussi improved to 14-5 to stay in this place in Greece. Partizan shined in a 73-81 win over Union Olimpija in Ljubljana to improve to 17-5 in the
Adriatic League
– two wins fewer than first placed Cibona. Jan Vesely led the winners with 27 points on near-perfect shooting. Meanwhile Cibona, which still contests a Euroleague playoff spot from Group H alongside BC Khimki Moscow Region and Caja Laboral, downed cross-town rival Zagreb CO 76-87 on the road as Marko Tomas scored 19 and Samo Udrih added 17. Russian League
, Khimki edged Krasnye Krylia 59-69 behind Vitaliy Fridzon’s 21 points. Fedor Dmitriev sank back-to-back threes in a fourth-quarter rin to break open the game as Khimki upped its record to 11-3, second only to CSKA Moscow. Laboral recorded a 104-79 victory over DKV Joventut, which faces a must-win game this week in the Eurocup to reach that competition’s Quarterfinals. This season's Euroleague Top 16 is producing more drama than any other in recent years and the focal point is in Group F, where all four teams are tied with 2-2 records. That foursome all gained momentum over the weekend with victories in their respective domestic leagues before big upcoming Top 16, Week 5 showdowns. Montepaschi Siena, which travels to face Maccabi Electra on Thursday, remained undefeated in the

by topping another team that started the season in the Euroleague, Armani Jeans Milano. David Hawkins scored 17 points to lead Montepaschi past his former team as it improved to 19-0. Maccabi cruised in the

Barcelona lifted its first official trophy in the 2009-10 season by edging archrivals Real Madrid 86-82 in the title game in Gran Canaria on Saturday. It is Barcelona's second Supercup title, as it previously lifted the trophy in 2004. Euroleague MVP Juan Carlos Navarro led the winners with 22 points. Boni Ndong added 13 while Pete Mickeal, Terence Morris and Erazem Lorbek each had 12 for Barcelona. Jorge Garbajosa had 17 points for Madrid, Pablo Prigioni added 12 while Felipe Reyes got 11. trophy. Olimpija thrashed Elektra Esotech 95-62 at home on Sunday to win its sixth consecutive Supercup title. Jaka Klobucar led the winners with 20 points on 4-for-6 three-pointers. Gasper Vidmar barely missed a double-double with 18 points and 9 rebounds while Matt Walsh fired in 4-for-5 from downtown on his way to 17 points for Olimpija, that outrebounded its opponents by 40-25. Olimpija already won the Slovenian League and the Slovenian Cup titles last season. The first domestic trophy of the 2009-10 season was won on Saturday in a battle between Euroleague rivals from Lithuania. When the dust settled, Zalgiris Kaunas had defeated Lietuvos Rytas 83-78 in a back-and-forth thriller to win the

title. Danius Salenga led the winners from Zalgiris with 18 points, while newcomer Martynas Pocius had 17 and was named MVP. Marcus Brown added 12 points for Zalgiris, while big man Travis Watson had a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds. Mantas Kalnietis and Tadas Klimavicius chipped in 9 points each. For L. Rytas, Milka Bjelica and Bojan Popovic led the way with 16 points each, while Martynas Gecevicius had 14 and Arturas Jomantas 11.
