Adriatic League, Final Four, Semifinals: April 19, 2011
Partizan and Union Olimpija reached the Adriatic League final! Both teams survived their respective semifinal games at Stozice Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and will face each other in the final on Thursday. Partizan reached the title game by rallying to edge Buducnost m:tel 62-58 in the first semifinal. Curtis Jerrells and Rasko Katic paced the winners with 13 points apiece. James Gist added 12, Dragan Milosavljevic had 11 while Jan Vesely got 10 for Partizan. Marko Simonovic had 14 points for Buducnost while Vladimir Dragicevic added 11. Buducnost led for the best part of the game and a three-pointer by Bojan Dubljevic gave his team its biggest lead, 39-48, with 8 minutes left. Katic brought Partizan back to life but Buducnost still led 48-53 midway through the fourth quarter. A 6-0 run that Vesely capped with a put-back dunk put Partizan back ahead, 54-53. Buducnost still regained the lead, 56-58, with 53 seconds to go but free throws by Katic and Jerrells plus a dunk off a steal by Gist allowed Partizan to get to the final. Union Olimpija will meet Vlade Jovanovic’s crew in the title game after downing Krka, 67-57, on the day’s second semifinal game. Paced by Saso Ozbolt’s 19 points and Goran Jagodnik and Kenny Gregory’s 11 apiece, Olimpija got off to a hot start, scoring 8 unanswered points to take the early lead. Despite the deficit, Krka was able to reach halftime only down one possession, 30-28, by staying strong in the paint despite shooting a paltry 3 of 17 from beyond the arc overall. The losing side finished the game with only two players reaching double figures in scoring, as Zoran Dragic totaled 13 points and Smiljan Pavic added 10. Behind Ozbolt’s long-range accuracy, Olimpija’s lead widened to 45-32 midway through the third quarter. Still, Dragic and Dragisa Drobnjak kept Krka in the hunt, as the final quarter was reached at 52-43. But, as Olimpija got closer and closer to the title game, Kenny Gregory assumed the leading role and paved the way for the winners, scoring 7 points in the fourth to seal the deal for Jure Zdvoc’s team and set a top-notch showdown for the Adriatic League crown: Olimpija vs. Partizan.
