Belgian League Finals, Game 3: June 4, 2011
Spirou Basket Charleroi successfully defended the Belgian League title on Saturday night with a 59-53 victory over Generali Okapi Aalstar. Kyle Weaver scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to pace Charleroi, which wrapped up its fourth consecutive league crown and the 10th in club history. Demond Mallet was named finals MVP after scoring 11 for the winners and averaging 17.7 points per game in the three-game sweep. The hosts jumped out to a promising 23-14 lead by the end of the opening quarter, but Aalstar clawed its way back to make a game of it. With the score 46-44 entering the fourth quarter, Spirou turned the defensive intensity up a notch and limited Aalstar to just 9 points the rest of the way to secure the win and the title. Andre Riddick also played a big role with 6 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for the champs. Chris Copeland paced Aalstar with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Belgian League, Season 2010-11
The gap between the best and the rest in the Belgian League has closed a bit with defending champion Spirou Basket Charleroi working harder than ever last season to hold off regular season winner Belgacom Liege. Telenet Oostende, Dexia Mons-Hainaut and Antwerp Giants remain among the contenders, while Generali Okapi Aalstar will look to prove that last season’s fourth place finish in the regular season was no fluke. Charleroi returns with its top players from last season, including Dwayne Broyles, Brent Wright, Justin Hamilton, Chris Hill and defensive ace Andre Riddick. The additions of Joseph Gomis and Demond Mallet at guard, Brian Greene at forward and Christophe Beghin at center keep Spirou a favorite. Liege will compete with a talented roster that boasts the guard trio of Cedric Bozeman, Micheal Jenkins and Nik Raivio in the backcourt and veteran Guy Muya and rookie Taylor Griffin at forward. Oostende has accomplished Belgian League stars Trevor Huffman, Will Thomas and Marcus Faison to lead the way. Mons features an electric backcourt with Marcus Hatten and Ron Lewis plus Peter van Paassen in the middle. Bryan Hopkins and Roel Mooors are back with Antwerp and joined by dynamic small forward Darnell Wilson to make a run for glory. Okapi picked up Anthony Hilliard and Chris Copeland to lead the team. VOO Verviers-Pepinster led by Wink Adams, Stella Artois Leuven Bears with Brandon Freeman and Optima Gent with Monwell Randle will try to mount surprise challenges for the top of the table. Although Spirou and Liege are as strong as ever, the competition also is better, setting the stage for an exciting season in the Belgian League.
