Spanish League Semifinals, Game 3: May 31-June 1, 2011
Regal FC Barcelon completed a three-game sweep of outgoing Spanish League champion Caja Laboral on Wednesday, one day after Bizkaia Bilbao Basket bested Real Madrid 68-51 to take a 2-1 lead in that best-of-five semifinal series. Barca beat Laboral 61-71 on the road thanks to Juan Carlos Navarro and Alan Anderson, who scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead a well-balanced effort. There was a lot of back-and-forth early, with triples by Ricky Rubio, Erazem Lorbek and Jaka Lakovic helping the visitors race to a 20-28 lead before Fernando San Emeterio helped the hosts cut the gap to 2. Boni Ndong made it 31-35 at halftime. Ndong continued his impact early in the third quarter as Barca went ahead by 10. San Emeterio again rescued the hosts and early in the fourth quarter baskets by Pau Ribas and Marcelinhoi Huertas had Laboral as close as 53-55. It remained close with Barca up 61-64 with a minute to go, but Navarro took over down the stretch and Fran Vazquez added a clutch offensive rebound that sealed the win and the series. San Emeterio finished with 14 points and Ribas scored 10 in defeat. On Tuesday the story was the Bilbao defense that shut down Madrid. The visitors were held to 8 points in the second quarter and 11 in the fourth while putting up plenty of points of their own to move within one win of a historic ticket to the finals. Marko Banic amassed 13 points and 11 rebounds, Janis Blums scored 12 and former Madrid forward Axel Hervelle had 9 points and 8 boards for the winners. Sergio Rodriguez led Madrid with 18 points.
