Belgian League, Regular Season, Game 14: January 6-8, 2012
Generali Okapi Aalstar moved into a tie for second place and within a win of first after knocking off defending champion and Belgian League leader Belgacom Spirou Charleroi on Sunday 77-76. Chris Copeland scored 25 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the winners, who improved to 8-5 and tied with Telenet BC Oostende. The game was close throughout the 40 minutes. Justin Hamilton boosted Spirou to 69-73 late, but Kevin Kruger tied the score from the line with two minutes to play and Chris Young put the hosts ahead for good. Jiri Welsch made it a 1-point game and Charleroi had a chance to win it, but Aalstar was up to the challenge on defense and denied the visitors in the end. Jorn Steinbach added 13 points and Young 12 for the winners. Welsch led six Charleroi scorers in double figures with 15 points. Oostende got a 69-75 road win over VOO Verviers Pepinster. The score was tied at 36-36 at halftime, then Oostende got a slim 58-52 margin at the end of the third quarter they were able to keep till the final buzzer with excellent accuracy from the foul line. Dusan Djordjevic with 20 points led the way and Chris Booer and Matthew Lojewski added 13 apiece, while Jason Love had 21 for the home team. Leuven Bears routed 70-57 Optima Gent as Ade Dagunduro and Jamel McLean scored 14 points apiece for the winners. Belgacom Liege Basket edged Port of Anwerp Giants 78-74 in come-from-behind style after trailing 47-57 at the end of the third quarter. They sparked an outstanding offensive performance in the last 10 minutes with 31 points to take the win. Guy Muya netted 21 points and Len Matela added 20 for the winners.
